Hey community!

I want to upgrade my GPU from my ancient PNY 9600GT 512MB to a brand new GTX770.

1.)
First I thought I wanted the GTX680, but if I'm correct, the GTX770 has the same chip, is optimized and thus has better specs and is usually cheaper or the same price. That made me wanting to buy the GTX770. If someone thinks this card is bad or way too overpriced, please let me know and I'm happy about any suggestions you give me, but the price may not exceed the 400 - 430 euros I want to spend on a GTX770. (And this is A LOT for me, I normally don't spend more than 200 euros on video cards...)

EDIT: Would the 2GB of RAM be a problem in the near future? Currently, I only play on one 1080p monitor, but I'm planning on buying a second one or maybe even a higher resolution monitor. Also: the next-gen consoles (I'm certain about the PS4, not about the Xbox One) will have 8GB of shared RAM. So this RAM can be used by the GPU and the CPU at the same time if I'm correct. Will this result in multi platform games which are badly optimised for video cards with only 2GB of RAM? If 2GB is not enough, please give me any suggestions about another card.

2.)
Now I have got a question. I'm not really into the GPU market anymore and I don't know which brand to choose. I've read a lot about the Asus and Nvidia reference models. I also read in a lot of comments on forums that people loved the EVGA model.

I don't like the looks of the MSI model and I've never heard of Palit or Galaxy, so I'm not buying these. I'm open for suggestions about PNY and Gigabyte, but my preferred options are Asus, EVGA and waiting for a model with the reference cooler.

Is there any actual (noticeable) difference in performance between these three?
I am talking about:
- Asus GTX 770 DC II OC 2048 MB
- EVGA GeForce GTX 770 (02G-P4-2770-KR)
- Nvidia reference model.

EDIT: I don't want to overclock my GPU, but I love good cooling for reliability. I would also like the card to be relatively quiet.

2.5.)
I also LOVE the looks and reviews of the reference cooler which is also used on the GTX780. Has anybody any idea if or when this cooler will be used in actually purchasable cards? And if so, by which manufacturer?

3.)
Any advice on a good, reliable, but not too expensive PSU to accompany this new GPU?
EDIT: I love Antec and Corsair, but I'd like to get some advice on specific types or another brand.

Greetings!
Sven

1.) 770 is more future proof, also 2GB of RAM is plenty enough. The 770 is so fast that its caching so you have no worries.

2.) From the 2 i would say ASUS DCII is the best. If you spare a few more $, i would strongly suggest the EVGA 770 ACX. EVGA is imo the best makers of Nvidia cards. I've never owned a bad EVGA card ever in my life, even before when they were called Voodoo.

3.) Corsair makes great PSU's, take a look at the Enthusiast series. They always have deals, this week newegg has some discounts on Corsair PSU's, you shoud check it out. http://promotions.newegg.com/case_PSU/13-2251/index.html

1. Go for the 770!

2. Not really. If you aren't going to do any overclocking, then obviously the highest factory clocked card will be best in terms of performance, so long as cooling is also adequate. All that said, I'd also recommend an EVGA card.

2.5 To my knowledge no manufacturer in the US offers a 770 with the reference cooler. On the other side of the pond, Inno3D supposedly is the only one to offer the 770 reference cooler

3. Also look at Seasonic. Specific PSUs depends on approximately how much you're wanting to spend.

Thank you very much for your fast response!
1.) I won't worry about the 2GB anymore, thank you!

2.) I didn't know about the ACX cooler. I like it, but it's another €20 more expensive over here... Is the ACX truly better with the normal GTX770? I've seen the GTX770 SC (super clocked) also exists (with ACX), but that's another €30 more expensive... (total price of the SC with ACX is €479 and that's just too much for me now... I've got a budget of 400 - 430 EUR, but if it's really really really better I can stretch it to €450). Is it just a brand preference of yours, or is the EVGA w/ ACX actually better than the Asus DCII ?

EDIT: Nevermind about the price. I've found a store over here which sells the Asus DCII and the EVGA SC w/ ACX for about the same price. I prefer the looks of the Asus though, but if the EVGA SC w/ ACX truly is better, then I'll obviously go for that one.

3.) Thank you about the recommendation about PSUs! I'm from Europe, so I can't order from NewEgg however. But I will take a look at the Enthusiast series. How much watt should I go for? (Currently I've got a pretty old Q9300 CPU, but I'm planning on upgrading this next year, or even earlier if I've got the money)

Thank you for your response!

1.) Haha, ok! :p

2.) Then I'll take a look at the stock clock speeds, but I think I remember there wasn't a great difference.. Ok, that's the second EVGA recommendation, plus all the ones I've read on other forums. Is it build quality? Or why?

2.5) I actually didn't know about Inno3D selling with the reference cooler! Thank you. But I'll pass on Inno3D I think...

3.) I'll take a look at Seasonic, but don't know them. Maybe more of a US brand? (I'm from Belgium) Well, I don't want to spend too much on PSU, but I still want to spend enough to get decent quality. When I was looking around e-shops I got the feeling I could find decent PSUs for between 90 and 120 euros.

Wel I just ordered my new GPU and PSU and I decided I'll upgrade my mobo and CPU too now! I just ordered everything.

I went with:
- GPU: EVGA GTX770 SC w/ ACX Cooler
- MOBO: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
- CPU: Intel Core i5-3570
- PSU: Corsair HX650 80+ Gold (there is also a Bronze version, but I went with the Gold.)

About the GPU:
I don't like overclocking it myself and this one has the best stock clock, one of the nicest coolers and everyone said I should go for EVGA, so yeah, not that hard of a choice.

About the PSU:
I like really like the cable management and I've read it's even better than the TX650M.
I won't go with SLI, so I chose a 650W. I know this may still be a bit overkill, but I like it my PSU doesn't have work hard for getting everything powered.

The best cooler is of the ASUS DCII OC ... If u care then atleast read a blog or article about it.
I presonally own d 770gtx ASUS and u wont hear a noise even while playin Absolution..i play for lik 4 hrs and still temp is lik 55~59 on GPU-z. Better still...u may have got a bunch of EVGA fans here luckily..but i am lenient here..and since i bought this i know..and i am personally very much satisfied wid it. Rather dont hurry now...cuz gpu is lik ur baby. So ask other too and then go for ordering things. Theres not much of a difference between EVGA AND ASUS but still..having a heatsinks in Direct Contact (DC) with stock OC'd version of gtx770 reference..i would say ASUS is the 1 u should go for.

Hi

I'm sorry to hear this. I already bought my GPU. I bought the EVGA GTX770 SC w/ ACX cooler. I'm very happy with it, but got some heat issues, I bought a new case and it's already cooler. I'll buy an extra cooler for the side of my case too, I hope it'll solve the problem.

Thanks anyway!

Greetz

Or it could just mean that the case needs better cooling. OP seems to be correcting that. Don't worry ThirtyOne34, you got a good card.

I think this is the problem. I had an old Antec Three Hundred, full of cables, hard disks, etc. Now I bought an Antec Nine Hundred Two v3 with MUCH better cable management (better airflow), hard disks in the lower cage (I ditched some unused hard disks, also better airflow thanks to the fans in the front) and will be trying to add a fan to the side (I hope this will work, because my CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU cooler is huge.. I looked it up before I bought the case and people online said it would work, so I hope it does.). This case has got some really nice airflow now, and I already noticed lower temperatures.

Another question: when playing FarCry 3 Blood Dragon for a while, I had to reboot the game because there were graphical glitches (huge triangles and stuff) which made the game unplayable.. Has this also to do with heat issues (got this too in Tomb Raider on PS3 when playing for hours), or driver issues (didn't reinstall windows 8) or is my GPU faulty?

Thanks a lot!

With kind regards

I would download GPU-Z or another hardware monitoring program and see what your temps are during gameplay. If your temps are high during gameplay, it could be a bad seat on the card's cooler. If your temps are within acceptable ranges, you might have a bad card or another issue altogether.

You can certainly make sure you have the latest drivers from Nvidia and/or, if you're up for it, reinstall Windows and see if that clears it up.

I already used SpeedFan... But when I have my extra fan, I'll try GPU-Z and try check everything you told me. Thanks a lot!
