i just installed a new motherboard, set of ram, and cpu into my computer. previous build worked fine, just wanted to upgrade

previous build for reference:
mobo: gigabyte ga-m57sli-s4
cpu: amd 64 x2 dual core 4200
ram: 2x gskill ddr2 800 2gb
gpu: geforce gts 250
psu: rosewill rp550v2-d-sl 550W

new components im installing:
mobo: msi 890fxa-gd70
cpu: amd phenom ii x2 3.2 ghz dual core
ram: 2x gskill ddr3 1600 4gb

everything went in okay. all the fans work, no weird beeps, cpu heatsink feels warm, except theres no video output, and beyond that im not sure what else could be wrong. tried different slots, made sure the card was completely connected, still doesnt work.

im inexperienced with building, so the possible mistakes can be endless. appreciate any help

Can you even get to the BIOS, before Windows tries to load?
You would have had to reload Windows to get it to work with the new motherboard (MANY drivers are utterly different), but before Windows even loads you should be able to get into the BIOS.

dont know if this makes a difference, but i checked the manual to interpret the mobos led signals

the debug led blinks "FF" several times, then doesnt go throuhh the rest of the POST. FF signifies power is on and the first CPU initialize, but it doesnt go to the early CPU initializations which are co1 2 and 3. the CPU phase lights arent on either. i literally took the cpu out from the motherboard just to test, and the led debug lights did the exact same thing.

could my cpu or mobo be the issue? unfortunately i dont have a compatible cpu or compatible mobo to test either one of them

its possible, but thatd mean id have to have zapped two different cpus considering i cant even get my old build to boot up, and ive handled cpus before with no problems in the past.

i remembered another bit of important information though. something is wrong with my psu or case so that when i send power to my computer it immediately turns on all the leds and fans, but it wont actually boot up until i hit the power button on my case. i tried it to see if i could get my old build to boot up, but there was still no signal. i put the new mobo back in with the new cpu and ram, and tried actually hitting the power button to make sure it actually booted. now all the cpu leds turn on, but the debug led just flashes FF over and over, and theres still no signal.

im so confused zzz

i put the psu brand and model in my initial post

the graphics card has the 6 prong power cable hooked up, and the fan spins. i might be able to take a picture with my phone

Ah right. Well, it's not modern by any stretch, but that PSU is from a line in which at least one other member passed Jonnyguru testing. With so many other things ruled out, it is possible that age has finally caught up with it.
Do either of the motherboards show evidence of bulging or leaking capacitors? Google for "bad capacitors" to see images of what they look like.

none that i can see. im reluctant to believe the problem is with my old mobo though. it was running just fine this morning before i took my pc apart, and my pc had been running almost nonstop for the last few years until this morning. the only change that happened between then and now is that i tried to replace the mobo.

yeah i do. hooked up just to the mobo cpu and gpu and i get the same symptoms: no video signal, and the POST debug led keepa flashing the power and cpu initialization code FF

one other thing to note is that the backup psu doesnt meet one of the gpu's min requirements. its not the wattage, but i cant remember what it was

i checked the monitor and its on the correct setting

yeah, the case has raised mount points. i checked both times i put it in for anything stuck beneath it. ill try running it outside the case and see if it does anything differwnt

thanks for all the help thus far, i really appreciate it

couple updates:

went through more dumbproof diagnostics, turns out the cmos came in set to clear, which prduced the flashing "FF" error code. set the cmos back to keep data and now i get a new error code, "d1" which i had to look up and unfortunately it appears it can be many things, from memory to no keyboard, apparently.

at any rate, i tried removing the psu entirely to see if i got a differwnt error code, and i did -- it went back to "FF". so it probably isnt the cpu and is less likely to be the psu or mobo, though obviously gotta test more. i then repeated the same test with memory and ran the pc with no ram, and it gave me the same d1 error code . then i trired each slot with either ram card one at a time, and im still getting the same "d1 error code. problem is i dont know if the mobo is getting held up with another error before it goes to ram.

seating the mobo outside the case didnt help
