i bought a 64gb usb3.0 (brand new) thumbdrive from japan to store my excess photos while travelling. it worked well and transferred normally when i was there. however when i came home, it initially gave me this message :
"you need to format the disk in drive E: before you can use it".
usually, the problem would go away if i tried the same thumbdrive on another computer. it didn't - and that was after i tried like 5 separate computers with different configurations and OSes.
then i started using data recovery software. the first i tried was TestDisk (seemed to be highly recommended on several forums).
it could detect the drive at first, but while recovering the drive in the process, it 'disconnected' and the drive just disappeared. i checked in 'disk management' on win8 pro and could not see the drive at all.
however if i waited awhile after unplugging and replugging it again, it goes back to square one... "do you want to format it".
i made sure it wasn't a software issue - hence i tried other software, e.g. PhotoRec, Active partition recovery, Easeus and all exhibited the same symptoms - it could only recover like 1% of the files (or less than 20seconds active) before the drive disappeared.
may i know what i can do on my side? the last resort is to turn it over to a professional and i certainly won't do that, cos it would cost a huge bomb to do it. i wanted to try fixing the MBR or recreating a table, but afraid it would take the data away with it.
the drive has not been dropped, nor has it suffered any physical damage before.
