Upgrade from i3 540 to i5 760 - enough power?

Hi,

I've just installed my new i5 760 cpu, but wonder if the 4 pin 12V cable from my psu is enough to power it, or if I should get a 8pin cable or even a new psu. Before this cpu I used the i3 540 which worked fine. My current psu has 550W.

Best Regards,

The four-pin connector will be sufficient. Your motherboard may not be suitable for high overclocks (the VRMs may be too small), but at stock or mildly overclocked you'll be fine.

Any idea why an Asus support staff suggested to plug in two 4 pin cables and stated that it is necessary for booting and getting CMOS to run in the first place?

The motherboard has an 8-pin connector? Even so, usually only one set of four (the left OR the right, not the middle) pins needs to be used, in fact there may have been a little sticker over the other four, in case your PSU didn't have all eight.
If it worked for the i3-540, I'd expect it to work with the i5-760.
You won't be wasting your money if you upgrade your PSU to a newer model though. Five hundred to 550W should be sufficient. The newer Rosewill PSUs are good (e.g. Capstone), as are any made by Seasonic (their own, XFX, some Corsair, some Antec).

Yeah it has an 8 pin connector, but one was covered with plastic. I'll try a psu of my friend, which has two 4 pin connectors just to be sure this isn't causing my current no POST issue.
