I just built a budget gaming pc. It was my first build. I was hoping to play arma 2 but that wasn't my primary reason for building the pc.

Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz

ram:8gb(2x4gb) corsair vengeance

graphics card: SAPPHIRE FleX HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB

I have everything set to the lowest possible settings. Fraps shows me in at 60 fps until I start walking through a field. Then it hits 22-30. Is this normal? I was told by a few people on this forum that my set up would be able to handle arma 2.

Would that be in advanced graphic settings?

I wouldnt say an advantage. But what vsync is, if you dont know about it, caps your fps at your monitors refresh rate. And vsync has a thing to where it will drop your fps another buffer to compensate for it dropping under "60". Assuming that you have a 60hz monitor. And also, are you playing the normal Arma 2? or are you playing something as Dayz or the wasteland mod?

Yeah days just naturally runs like that. Especially chenarus. Panthera, which is my favorite map. Runs always at 140+ for me. But campaigne I haven't played to much of so it so I don't know what my fps is on there. But try turning vsync off, and see what happens.

How are your temps (CPU, GPU)?

Do you have an aftermarket CPU cooler? If so, try overclock the CPU alittle

I'm telling you it really seems like a vsync issue. But I actually had the same CPU as you do before I upgraded to intel. And I had a throttling problem with it. It would be running at 3.4 then drop to 2.5 and float between that and 3.4. Which isn't normal. It's safe zone is 62C and I remember it always ran close to it, even with a hyper 212+ normal temps when gaming with it was 50-58C. So that could he a issue as well.

Go into the BIOS and raise the multiplier alittle. Try something simple like two ticks up (should make it 3.8GHz).

See if it seems stable and check performance. I would check temps before first.

Then check temps with OC
