this is preference, i love the 2500k and has some of the best OC ability, if you upgrade i would get more ram and a GPU and maybe an ssd if possible.

You will see post saying to only upgrade and PC is the master race but the ps4 is a pretty solid system and should last you for a few years for only 400$, plus you get some pretty good exclusives.

So it all depends on what you want to do i would recommend a pc upgrade and you would have better graphics than the ps4 but the ps4 would be simple to get and as far as i know they are already sold out of the launch day edition and will have to wait to be restocked.

Buy a CPU cooler the cooler master 212 hyper a PSU get a 750w and a gt 680 or a 7970 then with a 750w hr can crossfire/sli later. The ps4 has approximately a 7850 and a 7970 is about 3x the power so he shouldn't preorder

nice thoughts!
but it will be out of his budget, and i think 7970hd is a little overkill at that resolution.

I would vote upgrade the PC. $400 is a solid budget for some upgrades. The best combo for gaming would be a new monitor, a GPU, and some RAM. ~$150 for a budget 23-24" 1080p monitor and $50 for 8GB of RAM would leave ~$200 for a GPU. His power supply isn't the best but it's a decent unit for a single, mid-range graphics card like Nvidia's GTX 660.

Monitor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009255
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148540
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500270

The combo for all three comes in around $390 with 3-day shipping.

EDIT: Others may push for a stronger GPU that the GTX 660 but it's a big waste of money to go any higher than $200 for the GPU on this budget. With his current monitor any high-end graphics card would be absurd overkill, especially $300 cards like the GTX 660Ti. With a 1080p monitor and a GTX 660 he will be able to play most games at maximum settings at 60FPS and for games like Crysis 3 and Far Cry 3 he can turn down anti-aliasing to reach that 60FPS mark. Check reviews of the GTX 660 on here and on AnandTech how solid the performance is at 1920x1080.

He doesn't need to upgrade his monitor if he's happy with it its not going to make a huge difference a 7870 xt uses 7970 architecture so therefore its a lot faster than a 660 non ti

We don't know how happy he is with his monitor though. Moving from a 19" 1440x900 screen to a 23" 1920x1080 screen is a big jump and most users would much rather have a bigger, higher-resolution monitor on their desk. Games will look way better on a larger, full HD monitor than they would at 1440x900 on a little 19" screen. The GTX 660 is a great choice for a 1080p screen. I'm not saying it's faster than the 7870XT but a GTX 660 + 1080p is a much better combo than a 7870XT + 1440x900. The 7870XT is crazy overkill for that little screen.

The 7870 will play nearly every game at 80-100+ fps on a 1440x900 screen, at which point he's not getting his money's worth because all that extra performance is wasted. If he splits his money and gets a 1080p screen and a GTX 660 he will play most games at around 50-70fps because the card is a little weaker and the monitor has a higher resolution. He won't be wasting any performance from his card and can always turn down anti-aliasing to get much higher FPS because the higher-resolution screen won't require as much AA to make images look crisp and clear.

i think 7870hd is a good choice but will it work in my frnd psu?
and do i need new motherobard? because some are telling that i5 2500k is a waste without oc.
and dont think he will need a new monitor.

so what parts to buy?
