Hi, I am interested to know about overclocking. Does it helps to speed up computer. Can it be done to laptop with dual core.
Are there any negative effects. Can it cause any data loss.
Thansk

Overclocking means running the CPU at higher than it's factory shipped frequency (over - clock)
Generally laptops do not support overclocking
Negative effects include primarily higher power draw and higher heat (the CPU will be hotter and could require a bigger cooler. In a desktop this can be done, not in a laptop. This is one reason laptop makers don't allow OCing)

Overclocking is just running the cpu at a higher frequency. It does kinda speed stuff up.... But it in most circumstances cannot be done in a laptop because the laptop cpus are locked (cannot change the cpu frequency). Unlocked intel processors have a -k at the end of them (e. g.: i5 3570k)

It cannot cause data loss, but increases power consumption and heat. This heat (along with higher voltages needed for larger overclocks) can shorten the lifespan of a cpu...

Hope that helps!

Excellent answer, I'd just like to add and answer to the last of the OPs questions regarding DATA loss, Yes overclocking can cause DATA loss if done without proper knowledge of what you're doing.

Unless you have an extreme high end laptop you don't even have hardware upgrading options (like GPU for example), much less overclocking BIOS options
