recovery of hdd possible?

my external hard disk is not getting detected by the laptop n is making some popping sound when connected to the TV.
any one know what happened and if its gone then if the recovery of the data is possible

popping sound ? Wasn't the sound more like clicking noise?
Is it small 2.5" disk or larger 3.5" one ?

can u feel it spinning when u hold the disk when it is connected ?

Chances depend if the hard disk itself failed or just the usb case (then the HD may be fine). But if it's making noises it's more like a mechanical failure of the disk and chances may be small without the help of expensive professionals
