Hi! I was going to build a pc and I was wondering if I can use my old HDD. I have done some research and it all ends up saying "it is possible, but you need to reinstall a New OS"

My question is, whats going to happen if i plug in my old hdd on my new pc build? if it does work, how can i "reinstall the OS/wipe out the drive"

My only reason of reusing it is to save money so no need for back ups.

Thank you!

Solution
During the installation of the new OS, you are also given the oppurtunity to delete & create new partitions if needed. Be sure to switch your bios's 1st boot device to DVD, USB, or whatever your install media is.

I am sorry. This is my first time building a pc so dont have any clue on what to do. So basically, if I finished putting my parts together, the very first thing that I should do is go into BIOS then select boot from the dvd drive since ill be using a cd?

yes, actually i have a complete build but then i found out that i can Re-use my hdd and if it works out well i can just return the one that i bought. btw, I saw somewhere that if i tried to use my old hdd, it can mess up my vid card mobo etc. is this true? Thank you so much helping me!

Reusing an old hard drive should mess nothing up. If the old drive already has an OS on it, it most likely won't boot properly. Your best bet is to do a clean install (overwrite old windows or format the drive during install).

Depending on how old your drive is, it may be better going with the new drive anyhow as it's performance may be better. Look up the specs on both drives and see what their read/write speeds are. You always want a fast boot drive.
