Hey everyone,

I'm not terrible tech-savvy and I've recently started experiencing a very worrying issue with my computer. The problem is that it keeps freezing every now and then. During the freeze, nothing responds. I can't move the mouse, open the task manager, type anything or click on anything. Sometimes it lasts just a few seconds and sometimes I have to turn my PC off manually. The problem usually clears for a short time after I restart it although sometimes it doesn't.

What I've done so far:
  • ■Given the PC a good cleaning.
    ■Run CHKDSK.
■Tried to run Windows Memory Diagnostic.*
■Run Advanced System Care to have a check for disk errors, defragging, etc.
    ■Monitored temperatures.
■Checked my graphics drivers are up-to-date.
*The PC froze during the check and so I had to shut it down (I did wait 2.5 hours for it to advance from 10% to 11% but it didn't).

Things I feel I can rule out (please correct me if I'm wrong):
  • ■Dust.
    ■Overheating.
■Could I rule out something software-side since it froze during the Windows Memory Diagnostic? It didn't freeze during CHKDSK but maybe I was lucky?

    My system specs:
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium - 64-bit
    Version: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601
    Processor: Intel Core i7 - 860 @ 2.80GHz, 2801 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processors
    BIOS Version/Date: Dell Inc. A05, 08/07/2010
    SMBIOS: Version 2.6
    Hardware Abstraction Layer Version: "6.1.7601.17514"
    Installed Physical Memory: 8.00 GB
    Total Physical Memory: 7.96 GB
    Available Physical Memory: 5.92 GB
    Total Virtual Memory: 15.9 GB
    Available Virtual Memory: 13.5 GB
    DirectX: DirectX 11
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 4GB

I'm running a 350Watt PSU and my motherboard supports DDR3. The PC is ~2.5 years old.
I'm afraid that's all I know about my PC, but if there's anything else you need to know then I will try to find out for you. I don't have a multimeter unfortunately.

Any help would be HUGELY appreciate.

    Thanks.

I've used AVG Free and Malwarebytes to see if they come up with anything (along with Advanced System Care's malware removal) but none have come up with anything.
