not using ram

Hello I have a an asus p5lvm-1394 with 4gb ram an e6600 cpu and nvidea 8600 gt 1gb however it seem the motherboard is only letting me use 3.12 ram depite using a 64 bit os. I've tried changing settings in bios like turning of on board graphincs and does not seem to have an option to unlock the rmaining .88 gb can anybody help me with this, Ive checked the ram and no errors are apparent

What happens is that some of the addressable memory (regardless of how much you have physically installed) is reserved for use by page files or by some of the devices that you are using, such as a graphics card, PCI card, integrated network connections, etc., so it's unavailable for use as normal main memory.

Also try this: Msconfig > Boot tab > Advanced > uncheck the maximum memory box and reboot your system. See if there is any change in the amount of memory.

The page file (or virtual disk) is on the hard drive, and is where the DRAM automatically writes to when it is running low to store it till it's called for again so it doesn't have to recreate it or pull it across the network again, DRAM isn't really 'reserved' or held aside for it, generally what's written to disk is from a app or window that's open but is minimized or hasn't been accessed recently - having to read it off the disk when you go back to that app/window slows things down - for multi-taskers that's a good reason for greater amounts of DRAM, it can stay and reside in DRAM
