samsung s23700d 3d

or

dell u2312 ips

at same price

use gaming and movies

what is the color comparison when looked at straight

and as in feature list viewing angles are 178 and 178 degrees for dell

and 172 and 160 degrees for samsung

also contrast ratio is 3000:1 for samsung
while 2000000:1 for dell

can someone explain the difference

Forget those contrast ratios - they're both a load of crap. Firstly, the one with lots of zeros in it is a dynamic contrast ratio. This isn't true contrast ratio and in monitor specs it's totally meaningless. The number you want is static contrast ratio, and you don't want to trust the manufacturer for those numbers. Review sites like TFT Central actually measure the light/colour output of monitors and give you the true values. Both monitors will be below 1000:1 ratio in reality. You should do a load of research (TFT Central is brilliant) but if you want a quick answer: IPS, without a doubt.

I think the 120Hz is worth it especially for fast-action gaming like first-person shooter. Viewing angles really aren't an issue when you're sitting right in front of the monitor. Now if you sit back a ways or you have clients looking at the same screen when you show them a new ad, graphic or photo for their web site or print, viewing angles and color accuracy becomes really important. Unless you buy one of the higher-end IPS monitors, contrast can become an issue as well.

I'm on the other side of the argument from BigMack70, because I'm constantly playing BF3 and Crysis 3. When I'm doing any graphics or programming work, though, I like the IPS monitors because of the color and increased real estate of the 2560x1440 screen. But after trying both for gaming, I can never game on a 60Hz monitor again.

my gpu will either be a 7970 or a gtx 770 paired with a 3570k cpu

will only use it for gaming and movies

is the samsung really bad at colors and image quality compared to dell

i wanted it basically for 3d gaming and movies on my new pc

though i rarely play fps mostly rpgs so 120hz is not useful for me

also it does support amd hd3d does it not

Viewing angles are about more than just other people looking at your screen. Big problem with TN panels is vertical viewing angle, and that will affect you even sitting straight in front of your screen. You can see the colour shift as you change the height of your eye level relative to the middle of the screen. As you slouch down / straighten up, you'll see colours become stronger/weaker and also if you're looking at an image with fine detail, you'll see that detail disappear and reappear as the height of your eye level changes.

Problem is there's no perfect eye level with these panels because there's always gonna be some pixels above your eye level and/or some pixels below. You'll see stronger, more vibrant colour close to your eye level, but loss of fine detail (especially in darker shades). Further away from your eye level colours will be weaker and less vibrant, but you'll see finer detail. If you use an IPS panel, you'll have strong vivid colour across the entire screen and no loss of fine detail, regardless of whether your eye level is at the top of the screen, or 1/3 down or 1/2 the way down, it won't affect colour/detail and you won't get colour shift.
