The new consoles could shake things up a bit next year once they start porting their games to PC. No one knows for sure yet, but more VRAM may play a bigger role. Normally though I'd expect it to last 2-4 years depending on how demanding things get and whether you're willing to eventually lower graphical detail levels in a few years.

No need to upgrade my monitor because I hook the PC up to another 1980x1080p TV to play some games anyways.

Well my question is, is it worth the $400 at the moment or should I get another graphics card (maybe $200 to $300) and then when DX12 comes along upgrade or buy a 2x770's now?

At 1600x900 a 770 is plenty fine. You could probably go cheaper. 2x770 will not be necessary. Keep in mind you also haven't specified what you are looking to play with it. Even at 1980x1080p @ 60 hz a 770 should be fine.

I'll be playing MicroVolts, Call of Duty (if possible, at least a few of those that haven't been released yet), Battlefield 3/4.

If the second 770 will make a difference at that resolution I'll get it.

900p, you knew what I meant.

Damn numbers...

I am back...

 and yes I knew what you meant, thus I did not point it out to you, since you knew the mistake ANYWAY. LOL

Still was a pretty blond statement since the GTX770 would not "blitz" through ACTUAL 1600p...

But hey, had a good laugh at least.

BF3 = 70+ on high settings (not ultra).
BF4 = More or less the same.
COD = Every game on high 65+?
MicroVolts = 300+ because it's a very fast paced game. This card can do 700-800 in MV.

Will that work?
