Hey Everyone,

I'm having an issue with my new-ish western digital my passport 2tb external drive. I have a 1tb external western digital desktop drive, which started making click noises, and was no longer recognized by my computer. So, I purchased this mypassport 2tb. Now, this thing is only a few months old, I was able to access my data from my old 1tb external drive, I backed up all my data onto this new one. This new one has recently started making this random click sound. I recorded the sound with my phone, here is a link to the sound.

It happens once every 10 minutes at this point. It's really started to worry me, because, I did pay about 150 for this drive. I did not get the stupid warranty from best buy, which is stupid on me, if this drive is already failing. What can I do, is this something to worry over? Thanks in advance

thank you, I just checked, apparently I'm still in limited warranty until 11/22/2014, so should I just contact them and have them replace it? Is that a sound of failure?

I've heard much worse. It sounds like the actuator is resetting or attempting to re-track. It could be you have bad sectors on the disk? Sometimes those guys come with diagnostics tools included that can detect and make those repairs or at least isolate them. Have you tried that already?

It sounded as if the OP was weighing the option of RMA(possible 2 months without a drive) vs. what options he could possibly have with tools already provided by the manufacturer. I had a WD 500GB external drive where I lost about 1MB worth of space but been fine since. Why would the bad sectors multiply?

I just contacted them, they said that they'll ship me the new drive, and I'm supposed to ship my current one back in the same package. They said 3-5 business days, and since their warehouse is in CA, and I'm in CA, he said its most likely going to be 3 business days. Thank again for putting me in the right direction!

I had the same problem with my WD 500 gb hard drive. I had connected it to my laptop via a usb hub. All I got was clicking sounds. Then I removed my usb hub and connected the hard drive directly. It suddenly worked fine. This is the second time this solution worked for me. Don't ask me why or how? Know nothing about computers or how they function. tnttnb@gmail.com

Many laptops and front PC USB ports cannot provide enough power to externally connected hard drives via USB using only a single USB cable. Most require either a hard drive caddy either powered by a mains connected power supply or by a double USB or "Y" cable. That is, the USB cable that connects the hard drive to the laptop has a single USB end connected to the hard drive and 2 x USB ends that connect to the laptop to provide enough power to the hard drive. I have experienced this with externally connected hard drives, if they don't receive enough power they will click and not be registered with the laptop/PC. Many times you can overcome this if you connect directly to the rear USB ports (especially true on a PC), if you have them on your laptop, as these are directly connected the the motherboard and provide more power than front USB ports as these are generally connected via extension to the motherboard and supply less power, hence the requirement for a double USB cable.

ritarodas:

I dropped mine today and it started the kind of click sound you guys mentioned and although the blinking light is there when i connect it, it's not recognized by my laptop anymore. I never had any problem using it on my laptop before to suspect that the problem could be power or cable related. And also since this occurred after it fell. Should i be convinced that it's no use anymore?? Somebody tell me pls!!!
