Hoping for the best so here it goes...

A professor I work for gave me a personal USB of his to transfer some files that we work on (MRI stuff) onto my personal machine. I opened the USB, and copy/pasted the folder I needed from the usb to my mac. Anyways, I reopen the USB, and everything is practically gone, except for a text file and some terminal files or something. Everything I can see adds up to less than 1 mb, but it states that the USB has about 6 gb of information on it. I did the "show hidden files/folders" which seems to have worked for a lot of people, but that only provided a few other things, none of which add up to all the files that were on it before. I'm having a panic attack, I don't know how important all that information must be, I just want to get it back to the state it was before he gave it to me, or at least as close to is possible. I'm now working on it from my PC ( Windows 7 x64), where I'll be doing the troubleshooting. I'm attempting to use Recuva now, but it didn't look good in regards to what it said what files were recoverable and how many were not. The majority of comments from Recuva is "this file is overwritten with H:\?\'file names here it looks like".

My primary goal is to get it to look as it did before, which includes the appropriate directories and folder paths, since right now it looks nothing close to it.

thank you very much for the response. The ran the command you gave, it stated no problems were found, and that about 7 gb were used and about 1 gb were free, which is something I saw before, but everytime I go into the actual usb, I only see a few files that in total are no where near 1 gb in themselves, let alone 7 gb. I will be trying the software you linked to next, thanks again for the help.
