Hello all. I just finished my new gaming computer build.
Includes:
AMD FX-8350
Single GeForce GTX 660
(1) 2TB WD HDD
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AMD 9 Series Motherboard
16MB (2x8) Kingston
450w Ultra PSU (ULT-LSV450)

Now, under normal operation, everything works fine. Then, when I start up a game, (Far Cry 3) I start to hear this noise coming from the power supply. (I've already taken the side panel off and listened everywhere else.) There is no way it's the fan either. Because I can alt-tab out, the noise stops instantly, but I can still hear the fan and all other fans at a high rpm. I go back to the game and the noise comes back. It sounds like screaming electronics, a high pitched scratching noise. I play the game for another minute or so and then the noise goes into a peak screech right before it just turns the computer off. No problems starting back up, cpu temp at 47degrees C. So, my question is this, Am I simply starving the PSU of power to where it just shuts off or is something wrong with it? Either way It sounds like I need a new one.

Thanks guys,

-Eric

P.S. the PSU came with a $40 case

Ultra power supplies are absolute junk. Get rid of it and get a quality unit. Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, Silverstone, Enermax, OCZ, Antec or the higher efficiency Rosewill units.

The only Thermaltake units worth having are the higher wattage Toughpower units. And even then you can find better for the price. You recommend what you want. I will stick with proven quality. Thermaltake is not on that list.

The OCZ is a good unit. Overkill for your system but a good unit.

The Ultra is actually not working fine. If it could deliver it's rated wattage it should be fine for your system as a GTX 660 based system only needs a recommended 430 watts. And to be completely honest a high quality 350w power supply would run it. A little too close for comfort in my opinion but the GTX 660 is a pretty low power card.
