Hello All,
Need help regarding creating a server at my office.

They are having a lot of problems regarding data loss/historical data. Currently they are using Google Drive(Free) to store and access the data.

They need to create a server so that they can store and access the files in remote locations / on mobile phones /etc.

How to approach this
1)Create a physical server at the office so that people can access the files (Spread out over greater distances 100+ people)
Security Issues/Protocols so that only admin can modify the files. Users who do not have access can only view the files.
Also can anyone direct me to as to how can I setup, what all is required. I am not a professional.

2)Use some cloud server. No hassle in creating and maintaining the physical server.

They have data in excel sheets, word, etc.

And yeah can anyone also tell me about the costs involved.

You might want to think twice before embarking on this project if you're not an IT professional. It's complicated and you have a lot to learn and master before completing it. At least creating/buying your own server and administering it is going to be quite hard with the lack of knowledge you seem to have. If I were in your shoes I think I would go with option number two, just because your lack of expertise will not hurt you as badly and there is less to learn.

I have no clue about the costs, that is something you're going to discover as you dive into this project and begin a LOT of research.

I would suggest that you do not choose option #1 if you have no idea how to do it. A managed VM or server is more of the route you want. Like Hostway.

Hostway is better or Amazon?
Or is there something else better than the above?

I've often heard Rackspace.com mentioned when talking about hosted server solutions. With this (and similar services) you get a virtual machine which can be scaled to meet your needs and accessible from anywhere. Since it is hosted and maintained by the service provider, you don't have any up-front hardware cost but instead have a monthly usage fee. Often times they also have plans where their administrators can perform standard maintenance work or other tasks if needed.

Hostway is pretty good. I don't think Amazon would manage your instance for you. And Rackspace can manage it, but charges quite a bit.
