It would depend on the degree of overclocking, monitor resolution, expected settings (a 7870 doesn't cut it for 60 FPS at max settings for current games, much less future ones), and expected FPS.
plan to play on 1080p
and dont necessarily need a 60fps or ultra settings just want something playable in comparison to consoles
I tend to consider consoles to equate to 30 FPS/medium settings. That being the case, a couple of years. Perhaps three or four, depending on exact specs and the games you play. That said, I wouldn't use a 7870 with a top-tier CPU, even an older one like the 3570k. Do you already have this system, or are you thinking of purchasing it?
i have a xbox 360 and not likeing the xbox one so far so planning on makeing a pc from scratch im looking at about a 900 dollar budget for the OS and the computer itself then a aditional 300 for a monitor game i want (skyrim) internet security and a mouse and keyboard so around 1200-1300 total
You may wish to create a build thread for that, though I'd be happy to offer suggestions. First suggestion: shave a bit off that monitor budget, get the (ludicrously excellent) ASUS VG248QE for around $250, and put the extra $50 into the PC itself.
What's your ISP? Many of them provide free internet security software.
