Hi,

I just got the ASUS Xonar D1/DX; I'm a noob when it comes to audio and I basically have no idea what I am doing :pt1cable:

I've got a couple of questions to help me get my head round things. Any help would be great.

1. Firstly, I'm not sure how this works but I noticed the control panel which allows me to virtually move the speakers for the 7.1 sound. Is this like an override feature? Do all 3D games handle the speaker positioning themselves? Does enabling the speaker shifter override the game?

So I should leave the 7.1 virtual speaker shifter off as the game devs will have preset the speaker location?

2. If I set the sound to 7.1 and watch a movie which is 5.1 or play a game which is 5.1, do I need to change the settings in the asus control pannel to 5.1? Or will it automatically switch to 5.1?

3. Finally, if i dont use any of the special features supported, do I even need the Asus control pannel? Can't i just configure it through the windows surround sound config window?

Thanks so much for any help.

1) You only need to mess with this feature if you consistently hear sounds that don't match their locations. Otherwise, I'd leave it off.

2) A 5.1 movie only has audio for 5 channels and a sub. You don't need to change your setup from 7.1 as the side channels won't have audio sent to them (virtually or otherwise). You can leave your setting on 7.1 no problem.

3) I would definitely let the Asus Xonar software run in the background, even if you don't use all of the features. It works in conjunction with the drivers and will provide the best audio experience.
