Here's the setup.

1 Desktop PC, 1 Laptop, and 1 keyboard/mouse(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823126264)

They sit side by side at my desk in IT class. My laptop is for personal note taking and projects, while the desktop is for the hands on assignments. I use my laptop to document what I do.

I need a KVM switch to use the 2 machines side by side with 1 keyboard. Both screens need to be on for each respective machine.

What is a good KVM for this use, hopefully for 10-20$?

Well it wouldn't be that convenient to use a KVM just for keyboard input. And you would have to be constantly 'switching' the output to have the keyboard effect the appropriate machine.

The only modern KVM I have used is this $79 Rosewill. Which allows for switchless operation. scroll lock + scroll lock + enter would switch the outputs. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182198

For 20bucks they have another, but investing in a VGA KVM seems outdated. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182157
