Hey guys, I recently installed the hyper evo 212 following a youtube guide. However now every time i turn my computer on there seems to be a strange smell... Its kinda of like a burning smell but not... I really cannot describe it.

Have i maybe put on too much thermal paste?

Also, When i took it out the box the bracket that sits on the back of my motherboard had a cardboard/plastic stuff on it, I took it all off and just put the metal bracket on the motherboard. ( I never saw a single guide where the bracket had any covering on )

My question here is, Was i supposed to take that cardboard sticky plastic stuff off? I mean it was not easy to do which made me feel like i wasn't suppose to.

My evo is also facing up to the top of the PC not out the back.

Any help would be great as im starting to worry and its making me not want to switch my PC on. I have had it on for a few hours with no issues and the smell seems to go after a while, but im still worried.

Thanks.

No, the backing on that bracket was to insulate it from the motherboard. You may have a near-short in your system now, and the PSU is heating up and, since it hasn't just shut down, may lack proper protection circuits and is getting ready to blow chunks and/or kill something. What brand and model is it?
You should remove the cooler completely. Electrical tape should be a sufficient replacement insulator for the bracket, provided nothing cuts through it.

I don't have that particular cooler, but I would assume the insulation on the bracket is supposed to prevent any shorting of the motherboard by the bare metal of the bracket.
OTOH, if is were shorting, you would have had a fried motherboard by now.
Sounds like the thermal paste is baking. If any doubt, I would reapply it using just a small dab, spread it on the surface of the CPU as thin as possible. Also, don't forget to run a temp check of your CPU to make sure the heat is being transferred properly.

Well the thing is, Every single video i watched when installing this CPu cooler, they never once had any sort of covering on their bracket. Was just metal. They then just placed it on the back of their mobo and screwed it it just like i did, Then once fully installed they switched the PC on like normal.

Im real worried now, I cannot afford to replace anything in this machine, I spent everything i had saved on it.

Im hoping its too much thermal paste, When i look in my machine i can noticed some seepage around the outside. So i will most probably try re applying it.

Also, My PC has not been on much at all since its been installed and thermal paste applied, So could they be just settling in smells?

On my old CPU cooler my idle temps were 40 degrees ish and about 55 underload,

However this cooler puts me to 26-28 degrees on idle and about 35-40 degrees when playing a game for abit. So the cooler is working.

If you want to make sure there is no potential of shorting some contacts of the back of the mobo, just cut some cardboard in the shape (approximate, doesn't have to be exact fit) of the bracket (make sure the cardboard's edges are past the bracket's edges) and insert it under the bracket (unmount the cooler, do that, then refit the cooler).
