I'm considering ordering a GTX 780 for my new computer, but I don't want to buy a card that's overkill. I am currently running an AMD FX-8350 @ 4.2GHz, would this bottleneck the 780 at all?

Thanks guys

nope.

not unless you plan to games at sub 1080p resolutions... or you only play skyrim or civ5... but then if you weren't playing at 1080p or above i'd ask you why you're buying that gpu and not a better monitor. :D

Would you say a 780 is overkill for 1080p, would I be better off with a 770?

Yeah a 770 would max every game at 1080p

yeah... probably.

i mean i have a freakin 7770 with a phii x4 965be and i'm rocking 1080p, smooth as silk high or ultra settings any game i've tried. No claims for crisis (still haven't tried it), frankly i've little hope i can run that game... but everything else looks gorgeous.

if you're gonna game at 1080p only, on one monitor, I don't think you really don't ever need more then a 660ti or 7950 no matter what game you're gonna play. If your monitor is 60hz you probably could get away with a 7870/660, or even a 7850 or 650ti BOOST.

GPUs are really overpowered these days... i didn't really appreciate that until i upgraded my monitor to an HD monitor and my gpu to a 7770. That was sorta a game changer for me. To see beautiful full hd smooth as silk on a "low end" gaming gpu blew my mind. Makes me reconsider all the gaming benches I've seen as "unrealistic" and "unrepresentative" of the end user experience.

At 1080p, a single GTX 770 will max out all games with 4xAA except Crysis 3. You should be able to max out Crysis 3, just not with 4xAA.

I'm sorry but there is no way you are playing games released in the past year at max settings ultra smooth on a 7770 at 1080p.

i'll qualify my previous statement since i was in a hurry... obviously i'm not playing farcry 3 on ultra at 1080p... rather it's on high... as i said in my first post high/ultra... mass effect 3 is on the highest settings across the board... farcry3 however is not, but on high settings.

As for what is smooth, i don't usually fps watch... so i'm not sure what i'm pulling. I'll look up how to pull up my fps and get you a number if you'd like. All i know is the frames appear in a manner with no stuttering or hitches... the animation is smooth, not choppy... frankly it all looks natural and well paced. Now, if you have good frame pacing 30fps can look smooth as silk, where as 50fps can look choppy as hell if the frames aren't well paced. I realized this over 15 years ago, and stopped paying attention to framerates when i realized that 25fps could look better then 40, depending...

Either way i am very surprised at the general power and performance of the 7770... benches lead me to believe this was an entry level gaming card... where as in reality it seems quiet capable in the grand scheme of things on modern titles. Of course i long ago stopped being a hardcore gamer too... if i was rocking 3 monitors i definitely would be wanting more gpu.

I know this is a old thread but ive had a 660ti at 1080p and i felt like something was missing..Honestly i would go for a gtx 770 and 780 for 1440p
