Either your laptop was already messed up when you bought it or you have done something to it, maybe you could start it in safe mode and defrag it or somehow get Ccleaner, or if you don't have anything too valuable you could probably reinstall the entire thing... if you burned the OS to a DVD that is.

There are a lot of things you can try and see if they fix that but personally, if you've just bought or received this laptop and it still has warranty, I'd send it back to be patched up software & hardware, unless you're a computer savvy this can be a hassle.

DO NOT Defragment a computer as a repair method, it will only move existing stuff around to make things run faster, if you have a dodgy hard drive, or any corrupt data, it could spell the end of your entire laptop and/or loss of data and having to start from scratch. This applies doubly because your laptop will have Secure boot enabled so running recovery software will be impossible without Windows.

If you bought it new, it should come with a recovery disk. Use that to erase it and reinstall then everything should be good. Tell us the model and we will tell you where to find all the multitouch, screen backlight control stuff and any factory Sony stuff that you got and want back for your particular laptop.

If you bought it used, you may well have been scammed. Look at getting in contact with the previous owner and finding the box/documentation and particularly the recovery disk. Without it you're gonna have to pay for a new copy of Windows 8 to even have a chance of fixing it.
