Hello. I recently build myself a new desktop system and I have a strange problem with my old external hard drive.

The drivers for my WD My Passport Express (usb 3.0) hard drive are installed and windows 8 shows no problems. I can connect and copy/move/edit files perfectly fine. The hard drive works in every way except that I can't safely remove it with the eject media icon in the taskbar. The only way I can remove it is if i shut down the entire computer. This is not a pressing issue but it is very annoying.

Any help is appreciated in advance!

Are you getting any type of message such as " This device is currently in use. close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again. " or "Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again."? When trying to remove the drive make sure you have no open files from that drive. I have also read that an antivirus program may be scanning the drive and thus the afore mentioned message.

When you have the drive connected you can check to see whether or not Indexing is turned on or off for the drive by right clicking on the drive and then clicking on properties. Try turning Indexing for the drive off and see if that helps.

I am not getting any type of mesage from windows. Its almost as if windows considers the drive to be internal. I also have no open files from that drive. I disabled my antivirus (AVG) and still could not disconnect the drive. No program is using files from that drive I checked the drive to see if it was being indexed and it was so I disabled indexing for that drive. Still no luck. Thank you for the reply.

I'm sorry none of that worked. Are you ejecting from the Metro screen or the desktop screen? I'm not sure it will make a difference or if it can be done (not a Windows 8 user). This link - http://www.emusings.info/windows-8-eject-usb-drive-safely/ - may provide a solution.
