New Graphics Card

Currently own a Toshiba Qosmio F750 with a Nvidia GeForce GT 540M graphics card. I'm looking to get a better one to play more recent games (ideally Elder Scrolls Online when it comes out) as my ram and processor are fine and my graphics card could most certainly be improved. So just wondering what is the best graphics card I should get in the $0-$500 price range? and can i replace it myself or is that un-do-able ?

Generally no laptops have changeable graphics cards unless it it very top end and very expensive. Sorry man but you will need to buy a whole new laptop. This is why most people around here will recommend to build a proper gaming PC so that you can upgrade it as needed.

"Store Brand" laptops are generally not upgradeable. ya want a upgradeable lappie, start w/ a brand like Clevo where each one is custom built to user's specs.....and no it doesn't have to be expensive .

nvidia sucks though. Adaptive vsync doesn't work, Physx is in to few game, drivers are stagnant, many more new games are amd OPTIMIZED etc.

Well, two things:

1. Ya mighta noticed that the AMD Radeon HD 8970M was listed an option (ranked 15th option @ http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html) and it's priced well between the slower 770M (26th place) and faster 780M (9th place).

2. The buying public seems to disagree with your outlook since they outselling AMD by a factor greater than 2 to 1. AMD has just one card (5770) in the Top 10 DX11 cards list sales wise and that is two generations old

As for current generation (7xxx and 6xxx since stats are as of May 31) ... in the Top 20

7850 places 16th
660 places 8th, 670 places 9th, 660 Ti places 14th and 680 places 15th....7970 is way way down at 33rd place .... 7950 in 31st

I usually bought nVidia at $200 and up and AMD below $200 but the frame latency issue, CF problems, and the intro of the 650 ti Boost have forced me to move that line down. I still use AMD cards but only below the $125 price point.

Adobe will now support Open CL which should be a boost to them as it should blunt the CUDA thing but Shadowplay now adds yet another feature not available from AMD. This is of great concern as such a sizable difference in sales leads to increased prices.

As for PhysX .... I wish it had greater market penetration, it sure does add to the experience in games which support it, so easily worth the cost (free) ya pay for the feature.

the marketing propaganda is whats sells the cards as well people like you that direct noobs to an inferior more expensive nvidia option.

Drivers are stagnant?? LOL Are you only searching for drivers for the GeForce 200 series cards or something?? nVidia releases drivers for the 400/500/600 series fairly regularly. And just released a new driver for the 700 series they just released.

They release drivers that do nothing as in don't increase or decrease performance or optimizations. It's not about the frequency of releasing that counts it's about releasing quality that actually makes games run smoother.

I completely, entirely, and totally disagree. I update my nVidia drivers continually and rarely have regretted it. They do indeed tweak things and improve performance over time. I routinely will use nVidia Beta drivers and can think of only one occasion that I actually downgraded to an older driver.

Honestly you're either very ignorant to present day nVidia or just a massive AMD fanboy. I've owned ATI & nVidia cards over time and my experience has always been better with nVidia GPUs & Drivers.

And BTW: Games optimized for AMD GPUs had BETTER perform better. Because if they don't then that would simply be proof that AMD GPUs were severely lacking. Anyone can program a game to run better on one particular GPU or driver set. But who cares? If you want optimized for a specific brand go buy yourself an Apple/Mac.
