24bdi directional wifi antenna 0.5 mile distance

I have a clear path across a field to my friends house, which is .5 mile away to pick up his wifi. Just one tree at the back of his house. I will be using a 2000mw Alfa WiFi adapter with a high gain grid antenna. Will I need to have both an antenna at his end as well as my house? Or will I be good with one antenna at my house?

But wouldn't the antenna do both jobs receive and sent data to and back from the router

You'll need a very strong antenna on both sides of the WiFi network.
