Hello Toms!
I recently completed my first build and purchased a Sapphire HD7790 OC for 129.99. I have not opened it yet and can very easily return it. I recently saw that Newegg has the Sapphire 7850 OC for 154.99. Would it be a substantial improvement to return the 7790 OC and get the 7850 OC instead? Also the 7850 OC is cheaper than the 7850 factory clocked.

You should also realize that many nvidia-favor games like Diablo or Starcarft are put there to increase the performance summary of nvidia cards in TPU's chart.

On-topic: a worthy upgrade, especially if you do want to OC your card. A hd7790, even with OC-ing, can't reach the level of a HD7850 due to being voltage-locked, while an OC-ed HD7850 can blast even OC-ed GTX660 cards in games.

The one I would be getting is the 1gb version. Also it won't allow me to quote your post for whatever reason @JackNaylorPE, but according to that benchmark, the 7850 is superior in avg fps is most of the game benchmarks. As far as the % goes, I'd take the 2% drop in performance for the Never Settle Bundle, which is a large reason why I'm going with an AMD chipset regardless. That may have been important to mention so I apologize.

On a slightly different note, is there any reason that the OC version is cheaper than the non OC version? I understand its very easy to OC the non OC version to the clock of the OC version, but wouldn't that make it more expensive regardless?

EDIT: As far as the 1gb vs 2gb, I only plan on playing at 1080p and wouldn't be upset if I had to lower settings on various games to get playable fps. How would the vram differential affect performance?

Again on the topic of 1gb vs 2gb, would the 7790 OC 2gb outperform the 7850 OC 1gb? they are about the same price, with the 7790 possibly coming up cheaper.

From my understanding, the 7850 would out preform the 7790 regardless of ram because the 7790 is voltage locked and can take a certain amount of power, therefore, it can only go so fast.

As for the OC vs Non OC, I'm not very sure about this, could you link us or tell us the brand? Different brands have different prices for their products, so that may be the reason.

Sapphire. Its difficult to find both of them on the same website, but strait from Sapphiretech the OC comes in at 139.99 and the non OC at 154.99. Here's the link to the AMD store:

Thanks,
I took a look at it and they are from different stores. Tiger Direct is usually more expensive than a lot of dealers. The Non OCed was from TD and the OCed was from Newegg. Different stores = different prices.

Do you think that they maybe just discontinued the non OC version? It appears that there is absolutely no reason to purchase a non-factory OC'ed version of a card UNLESS the price is lower, and with 7850 prices this low maybe they just stopped making the non OC. When comparing average prices for the OC vs non OC, they are MUCH lower.

No, i don't think the OCed version was discontinued because they are from different retailers. The retailer may also have the OCed version but for a higher price than thier non OCED version.
