Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section!

My sister's laptop has been running very hot and loud for the past month and asked me to take a look at it. I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I installed SpeedFan v4.49 to check the temperatures, and it reads the GPU fan as 0 rpm.

I wouldn't know if the laptop has more than one fan, so please go easy on me. I just want to know if this definitely means this fan isn't working or whether it's the program making a mistake, and how I could go about fixing this.

Thanks in advance!

That helps! I don't think, this laptop has a second fan for the graphics card. That's why Speedfan reports the rpm as zero.
If not already installed, you can try the latest bios: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-100446-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=4314986&sw_lang=
Description says it provides better thermal management. You can also try to clean the fan with a vacuum cleaners carefully. For an in-depth analyses, download the maintenance manual here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&tmp_geoLoc=true&document=&product=4314986
