Hi, currently my motherboard is a gigabyte p67a-ud4 it is an early one where the sata 2 ports have stopped working, leaving me with just 2 sata 3 ports. This hasn't been an issue while I've only had one HDD and one DVD drive, however now I require 3 ports due to an extra HDD this has led to me disconnecting the DVD drive. Which is now a nuisance.

Right now I don't really want to spend the money on a new motherboard to replace my current one which apart from the sata problem, I have no issues with. Therefore I would like to know if there is any other way to connect my DVD drive or the best motherboard for my 2500k which I can source for less than £100 (new or used) I am not bothered about buying an older p67/z68 or z77 however do not require on board graphics.

Thanks

this is a known issue that led to recalls of lots of Sandy bridge boards .... sadly i couldn't find a workaround the problem is with one of the integrated chips on the board so a BIOS update wouldn't help, but no harm in trying, if it doesn't work the only option is getting a new board, i recommend this http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz77xd3h , it has 4 SATA III ports so u don't have to worry about SATA II

Is that motherboard of a comparable level as my current board. The options I've looked at so far are the identical mobo I have now but the b3 version without the sata issues or a P8p67 pro b3 both used for £65. Is the board you've linked better than both these or similar.

If you contact Gigabyte, they will probably replace it as they did for other customers having that same chipset issue.

Sorry but does that offer a significant benefit. It looks good and it's a good price. I know the motherboard I currently have is classed as mid range is that board the same or low end. I'm just wondering whether its better to buy a higher end old board rather than a lower end new board.

As said, no need to change your board while it's still function normally ( beside broken sata ports ), plus it's a mid end board. Just need to purchase a PCI-E to SATA card like this and put it on the PCI-E x1 slot of your board:

After looking into that pcie to sata adapter I was unsure if it fully works with a DVD drive or if there is a speed difference?

And they seem fairly expensive for what they are at about £30 so was thinking I may be better to just change the board and was looking at an ASUS P8P67 Pro B3 for £60 used. What are your opinions on this or is my current board better so I should just get the adapter. Thanks

Why do you suggest z series isn't the only advantage on board graphics and since I will always be using a gfx card I assumed it was an unnecessary cost.

And I'd love a free replacement but what do you think my chances are when I have no proof of purchase and no box for the board. After trying to find information on the issue I haven't been very successful.

Insist on it, especially if you are just now finding out, the ones that went out SHOULD have been recalled, but the mobo makers didn't do that....If told No offer to take it up with the BBB or FTC (don't have to do so, the suggestion might kick them into gear)...in the meantime the add on card with ports is a good idea and cheap, and don't bother worrying about SATA 2 or 3, epecially on a optical drive then neither they, nor platter drives can take the full bandwidth of SATA 2 let alone SATA 3 bandwidth...

Contact Gigabyte. You shouldn't need proof of purchase, but you should at least know the serial number of the motherboard. That way they'll know it's a non-B3 motherboard. I'm not saying that you'll succeed, but it sure is worth trying. The worst that could happen is they refuse to replace it.

You can OC on a P67 board. Z68/Z77 is not a must.

And they seem fairly expensive for what they are at about £30 so was thinking I may be better to just change the board and was looking at an ASUS P8P67 Pro B3 for £60 used. What are your opinions on this or is my current board better so I should just get the adapter. Thanks

Your current board is better than that Asus one.

And no there won't be any lost in performance for using that card, unless you want to connect a SATA 6gb/s SSD to but the card only support SATA 3gb/s. Plus they're being priced around 10 GPB instead of 30 on Amazon ( around 20 GPB for models with SATA 3 6gb/s ports but since your board already has 2 of those, I guess you don't need more of those 6gb/s ports ).
