hi, recently i have bought a new vtx3d 7870 from ewlink.com and it was all looking good. i had installed it into my computer with a 500w power supply and while i was playing Alan Wake, the screen started to go dark and bright again and then BANG. the power supply short circuited, even though the box stated that 500w would be enough. anyway, a week went by and i bought a new 750w atx power supply. the computer started and worked perfectly with the new graphics card. everything worked perfectly apart from when i started a game. i tried playing Alan Wake again and after a few seconds in game, the screen would start going dark and bright again and the game would crash. sometimes, on the bottom right of my screen an error comes up saying "device driver has stopped responding and has been recovered successfully". i dont know whats going on, i have all the latest drivers, updated my bios and tried almost everything in the book about this problem. please if anyone can tell me how to fix this it would be much appreciated.
the specs of my computer are:
3.6 ghz quad core amd fx4100 cpu
1333mhz RAM
vtx3d 7870 2gb gpu
750w atx power supply
1 tb hard drive
windows 7 ultimate

If you are using a $5 PSU that is your problem, its not just about the wattage, its about rails and amps.

even so it should work, 750w is more than enough and the amps on are also enough to power the card.

No its not. If you run a 500w system on a $5 750w PSU you are going to have a bad time.

Power supplies are so often the most overlooked components on a build despite being one of the most important. The power supplies mentioned by cookie are from reputable manufacturers and as a consequence their performance often exceeds their rating and power outage, plus they will keep a continuous supply to your much prized components. I personnally only use Corsair PSU's mainly because they have always been rock solid but I know there are others who do equally good PSU's.

The problem with cheap PSU's is that they don't necessarily do what they are advertised to do and in all honesty if you have spent all that money on a computer, then to chuck a cheap PSU is taking a risk. At best case it will work fine but you could end up having strange issues (such as you are), but at worst case the PSU could die taking numerous components with it.

This doesn't mean you have to go out and get a 1000W PSU for crazy money but look for one that gives you a little wiggle room in terms of your power requirements. If you need a 500W then look at a 550+ as I personally don't like to have it maxed out from the word go but with a decent PSU it will more than likely be fine.

hi, i bought the corsair cx600 and the same keeps happening. i am starting to think that the power surge may have damaged the card or the card is faulty in general. is this a possibility and could any other factors be involved in causing this? and if the power surge did damage the card then how come before the surge that the card was doing the same on games?
