I am in the market for a new laptop and price is a very important factor given what it is used for. It is used for light word processing, email and surfing the web. No gaming, no video. My guess is that any of today's processors could handle those tasks without me paying a premium to get "the best" processor. Is that true?

Solution
Yeah. The Pentium B CPU is based on the Sandy Bridge core so they are roughly 20% - 25% more powerful than AMD's Trinity / Richland APUs.
Yeah. Unless you are doing stuff like gaming or video editing, than just about any processor you can get would work fine. what i would recommend would be based on your budget. If you wanted flexibility for cheap, you could try finding a cheaper trinity based a-8 laptop, or you could go with a 3rd gen i3 laptop from asus.. The pentiums don't perform as well, they feel quite sluggish but would do the jobs you need them to do for sure.

I forgot to say that I do need a 15" screen due to my eyesight. Might be able to get away with a 13" - not sure. Does screen size make any difference in the CPU you need? The ones with larger screens do seem to have more bells and whistles but I am not likely to use the extras.

Sorry, I am probably not posting correctly. Can't figure out how to reply to a particular post. Anyway, to the person who mentioned the AMD E processors, that price range is exactly what I'm looking for so I will check those out. Thanks!

couple of things have changed. I actually need a 17" screen, not a 15" (very bad eyesight). Also, I want windows 7 instead of windows 8. After many hours of searching it appears I will have to get a refurbished laptop in order to get the specs I want for under $400.

Most of the refurbished 17" laptops with windows 7 that I can find have an Intel core 2 duo processor. Would that do the job (light word processing, light web surfing and emailing)?

I have run across some Pentium B processors and a couple of AMD A4. Would they be better or worse?

All the mentioned CPUs would be capable of doing what you want to do. Assuming you had one of each CPU and the were all clocked at the same speed, the Core 2 Duo would be the weakest, then comes the A4 and finally the Pentium B.

If you can go a little bit above your budget you can buy a new 17.3" Acer Acer Aspire V3-731-B964G50Maii which has Win 7 Home Premium installed for $440.

A refurbished laptop typically has a 90 day warranty so if you want to extend that for up to 1 year (like a new laptop), then you need to pay around $70 - $80 for that additional warranty. At that point it is simply better to buy new.
