I had a Gigabyte 5830 on which the fans stopped working mid-game and led to it overheating while I was playing. Since this was the second AMD card I've had go out in such a manner after a year of service I decided to go with Nvidia this time around. I picked out the EVGA 650 TI Boost 2gb version. When I installed the card and its drivers the computer would run for a few minutes, usually just long enough to log in, then it would turn off and restart itself. I did a clean install of Windows in case there was a issue of old drivers interacting with the new drivers. After installing Windows I installed the chipset drivers for my motherboard and there were no issues. Then when I installed the video drivers it started restarting itself again. I tried all of the available drivers after doing a system restore to prior to the previous driver was installed. Assuming some defect in that card I had it RMAed, but the new card does the same thing.

The Event Viewer shows a critical event labeled Kernel-Power Event ID: 41. Windows lists a potential cause as an underpowered PSU.

At this point I think it's safe to say that it's not a software issue so I'm thinking that it is hardware. I don't believe it is motherboard compatibility as it has PCI 2.0 slots. The PSU is rated at 550w but I've had it for 4 years now. While I doubt it is the case, I'm not sure if a PSU can be damaged so that its output drops or if that can happen due to age. If that is not the case, then I am leaning towards the motherboard having sustained some damage when the old card burned out. I'd like a more informed opinion before I chase the problem further.

System Specs-

Motherboard- GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3

CPU- AMD FX-4100 Zambezi @ 3.6GHz

8 gigs of RAM @ 1600

PSU- Corsair 550w

Windows 7 64bit

I could possibly get hold of another one for testing. That's my next probable step if, I can find one.

Yes, I used the 6 pin and just for good measure I tested it with the molex adapter that came with the video card as well.
