Chipset Fan Causing Boot Problem?

I’ve been having a problem lately with booting my PC. It locks up and stalls during startup before it begins loading Windows. I have tried loading from a Linux disk and a Windows disk with no success. I’m assuming it’s a hardware and not a software issue.

If I leave it turned off for about a half hour before I boot up, it starts fine. That seems like something needs to cool off to me. Once it starts up, there is no problem and it is often left on for days at a time without issue.

I recently opened the case up and turned it on with the cover off. It booted immediately with no problem. I noticed that the Chipset Fan was not working well. It started and then stopped completely almost immediately. When I closed the case, it would not restart until I left it off for a half hour.

Could a problem with the fan cause my booting problems?

Regards...John

Yes, the nForce4 northbridge also houses the southbridge functions that would include I/O and Memory functions. If the northbridge is overheating, yes, it would cause the system not to boot. You will want to replace that cooler with a comparable northbridge cooler.

I have personally used this Swiftech northbridge cooler on nForce4 motherboards, it fits the ASUS A8N-SLI perfectly however this cooler has been discontinued but it will give you an idea of what you are looking for.

The nForce4 chipset gets very hot, hot enough to melt the fan bearings on those rinky dink coolers. I would suggest replacing it with something a little more substantial. I just went to Swiftech's web page and apparently you can still get it from them so you may be able to find it elsewhere. Here is the manufacturer's web page: http://www.swiftech.com/mcx159-cu.aspx. Found it on Frozencpu as well. http://www.frozencpu.com/vid-20.html

There are other chipset coolers available. You will definitely want to measure the post spacing to make sure you can find one that will fit your motherboard.
