Is a CPU Cooler needed for my i5 4670?

I've read in many places that the included CPU Cooler with the CPU is just useless and they totally recommend getting a third-party CPU Cooler.

I did some research as well and found the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO which had some very good ratings (http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-RR-212E-20PK-R2/dp/B005O65JXI/)

Obviously, I'm not planning on overlocking the CPU.

Is it really necessary to buy one or will it be fine with the included CPU Cooler?

If you don't mind it lingering on the high end of the thermometer, no you don't. It won't damage it, but there are cheaper options available that are better than stock. Cooler running gear = more efficient and longer lasting.

Edit: If you are willing to drop 200 dollars on a CPU than why not drop 25 - 30 more to insure it? Always safer than sorry.

How much quieter is the aftermarket cooler than the stock one? This could be a good reason to spend the money for it.


I prefer running things cooler.

The thing with the price is that I already exceded a little bit from my budget so I'm trying to reduce the price as much as I can, but your "Always safer than sorry" convinced me, thanks.

EDIT: I've also read that this Cooler is for LGA 1366/1155/2011 sockets. Will it fit in the new LGA 1150 socket?

LGA 1150 uses the same mounting brackets as LGA 1155 so any LGA 1155 compatible cooler will work with LGA 1150.

The Hyper EVO can utilize aftermarket fans so you can make nearly silent if you so choose.
