I am re using my hard drive from my old computer. I have Windows 7 on it, but it originally came with Windows Vista. You can't do sysprep on a computer that has been upgraded to a new version of windows. It has to be on a custom (clean) install version. Last night I tried just plugging the hard drive in my new computer and booting up and it was "attemping repairs" and gave me the option to system restore and all of that, but I could not get it to work.

So what do I do now?

Solution
Yup, that's the way to go. Save all your important data and then do a clean install. You need a DVD drive to install windows 7. The asiest way to do it is to just put the win 7 disk in and restart the comp. Boot up from the disk and let windows do a quick format and then install windows 7. Your DVD drive should be recognized unless it or the comp is defective for some reason or another.

Update: I have a copy of Windows 7 on disc now. I'm currently zipping any folders of stuff I want to keep and emailing them to myself. After that I will format my hard drive and attempt a clean install. This should work correct? Also, last night when I first tried using the HDD on my new computer, I noticed that my CD rom wasn't working. Will that self-correct once I format the hard drive?

So I should take my hard drive out, as is, place it in the new computer, and then put in the windows 7 installation disc?

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I got it to work. Everything is good. I had to use daz loader to activate my windows though because windows is fucking retarded and wouldn't accept the activation code on my unused licensed windows 7 copy that I had a physical copy of.
