My brother recently gave me one of his old desktop towers that is several years old. I am just wondering how I should go about opening up the case and cleaning the fan sides etc.

Remove the screws that hold the side panel on and then blow out all of the dust using compressed air.

Make sure you get all of the dust out of the CPU cooler's cooling fins and the graphics card cooler's cooling fins (i.e. assuming there is a discrete graphics card installed).
