presently has 2.2 celeron at 35 watts. want to upgrade to mobile intel pentium p4.Request best upgrade for system plus best cooler. Now according to specs, the cooler is not adequate for upgrade. Because of the age of system, cost is an important item.
Thank You for and advice and information

Most of the replies for the Dell Inspiron are for a different model, I don't know if they apply for the 1000. The requirements are for
an upgrade CPU with adaquate cooler (fan and heatsink). Since it is a laptop, space is an issue. I would think a copper heatsink
and faster or larger fan would be the way to go but need information as to mfg. and model, then I could look it up and ebay or
similar.
The tech forums suggest an SL6WZ CPU at 35 watts but I am unable to locate one. Also an SL6GS CPU but it runs at 59.8 watts. Would need a 60 - 65 watt cooler. Don't know if a 60 - 65 watt cooler is made for that size case or which one could be adapted for it.

Reason CPU cooler needs upgrade. Information from another tech forum
Does anybody know of a cooler (fan and heatsink) better than the original cooler (35 watts) that will fit in the "Dell Inspiron 1000" case ??

I experimented and tried something as I have mentioned running music videos. These music videos
are low def. 480 to 240. Discovered something important, everyone knows these run hot enough to
cook an egg, so I removed screen bezel while flipping up keyboard to run a small house fan over
cpu, co cpu.

This made a big difference in ability for dell to handle videos, EVEN full screen video.
Occasional hiccup sometimes temp. to catch up. Runs many times better!! The small fan for cpu
is insufficient at keeping properly cooled, reducing performance. House fan ran over cpu units
w/ keyboard up.

Noticed two other things:
1) video in small screen runs better and main cpu runs cooler, cpu built in fan stays OFF with
added on house fan venting dell's interior
2) Same video in full screen mode makes cpu run much hotter, activating the built in cpu fan
controlled by a thermal setting. Video still plays fine w/ added on vent fan over cpu's. Full
screen video IS NOT possible w/ out added on big fan for good air flow.

The cooling fan is seriously insufficient, I guess good enough to avoid failures, but suffers
performance. I guess fan is small to promote battery life.
