It's been a long time since I did a custom build, (since pata was IDE!)
Is this set of components a good idea? Am I missing anything? (cables even, etc?)

You've got 2 sets of DRAM, hoping a typo, NEVER a good idea to mix set, especially of different density....Don't see any HDs or SSDs, would suggest a 128 SSD for OS and Apps, then a platter drive for data, size dependent on your individual needs - also obvious that I'm guessing you have like Keyboard, mouse, monitor and a decent thumb drive 8GB is normally sufficient

facepalsm on the mixed ram and no HD - grr.. if I take out the cheaper ram, -$70 and add $130 for an SSD - looks like a decent system.. but I have to wonder.. couldn't I pull a stock gateway system with an I5 processor for $600, swap out the power supply, and add a video card to get the same result for much less?

If it uses a stock PSU, many of the big names use proprietary PSUs and mobo combos to tie you into buying upgrades from them, at times did same w/ DRAM and HDs...another problem with many store bought is a locked BIOS that prevents you from OCing and optimizing
