Hey guys,

I've been scouting for a new rig to replace my pre-historical PC but my budget's pretty tight right now. Looking for options, I came across this machine with a pretty good price, but there's one thing worrying me: The CPU.

As described in the title, it's an i3 3220 with 3Mb of Cache. Considering this pc will be mainly used for gaming, will 3Mb do the trick, or will I have to level it up? An extra info: The GPU is a Asus GTX650Ti 1Gb.

I seriously want to play Crysis (not Crysis 2, fyi) maxed out. Judging through comparison of CPU and GPU hierarchy charts here in tomshardware, I think this rig will handle it, but before I proceed with the buying, I wanted to ask you guys for an opinion first. Any help is most welcome.

Thank you.

i3 should cut it but if you want a little more future proofing go with FX 6300, it has unlocked multiplier so if you need a performance boost in future a 20$ cooler should easily get you to 4.3 or 4.4 Ghz, and since it is 6 core, it would give you better results in CPU intensive games and video editing though it has higher power consumption than i3, and its single threaded performance is bad compared to i3.

i3 is good. But not recommended in terms of gaming use. Yes thasan1 is right, I will choose FX 6300 than Phenom II x4 965 and i3 but don't look for a future proof. Because that doesn't exist. Technology changing every now and then. Future proof is not true. As always you can be contented with your machine for at least 2 years even it is mid range or high end.

Why ? Because you will always expect the same performance as last year your computer was. As I told technology changing every now and then !

Thank you guys for your answers! I'll consider your opinions before I proceed with the purchase in order to have a better gaming experience.

If it's not too much of a trouble, here's another question: What OS do you think I should use in this rig: Windows 7 32 bits or 64?

Agreed ! Most of the software's using 64 bit.

Windows OS 32 bit only can hold upto 3GB i think. and 64 bit can hold upto 32 GB.

Ivy CPU can hold upto 64 GB Memory. I don't think what OS can hold 64 GB memory.

It's true 32 bit has a limitation of 4GB RAM. Other devices, like mobo and GPU, use this RAM too. If you have a GPU in your system, say a 1GB GPU, then the GPU will decrease the amount of RAM available for your operating system even more. Maybe down to 3.0GB. This will definitely affect the performance of your overall system.

Really ?? Hmm.. I thought 1GB in GPU is only to handle your Monitor. It wont affect your RAM. If you have 3 Display so you need 6 GB of GPU to handle it well. or 4GB..
Every Monitor need 1-2GB of GPU. (2 GB is better) I will confirm it if any.

GPU have their own memory. It wont really affect your RAM. as far as I know.

Here's some articles to help you guys understand how the 32 bit limits RAM.

Like I said, other components will use up your 4GB of RAM on 32bit. First off, the 32bit probably shows 3.5GB RAM, then take into the 1GB GPU and you might be down to 2.7GB.

@envy14tpe if GPU uses the Os'es ram adress thingy then lets say i have a GTX titan with 6GB ram and my system has 4 GB. so what will happen if i add the titan? will titan and the CPU will decrease its usable ram to 2 gb and 2gb? or will titan even work on that OS?
and i thought 64 bit had limitation of 128 GB. oh wait no its 17.2 billion GB. i wonder what mobo will support that......

If you had a 32 bit system with 4GB RAM and you added a GTX Titan 6GB then I'm not sure how that would affect your RAM. It won't simply be : 4 - 6 = -2 I think it'd be more like 1GB available. The big point is, if you want to game then you need 64bit system. The architecture is different.

Will Titan work on 32bit system. Sure, but a major bottleneck.

Please don't share your fuckn fool knowledge ! GTX Titan is not lik that Graphics card. It have their own Memory. Maybe other GPU will get RAM Memory. But Titan is not like that or any GTX GPU. Your such a fool men.

WINDOWS DOESN'T TAKE FUCKING RAM FOR A GPU YOU wise and beautiful woman DEDICATED GPUS HAVE THEIR OWN RAM AND TO IGPUS RAM IS ASSIGNED BY BIOS.

You can max out crysis like nothing with the i3 and the gtx 650.. and so many other games.Just dont buy amd..the fx 8350 have 8 cores with 8 threads 8mb cache 4ghz and still the i5 4670k kill him in perfomance ;)
