Hello, I have problem with my external hdd. When I connect to my laptop, it doesn't show in my computer and device manager. but it makes the device plugged in sound when I connect it. and also the hdd light still blinking, but not as usual. the light on the hdd changes when I'm using different usb speed 2.0&3.0(it's normal). I'm using windows 7 64bit. I have bunch of stuff in there, the most important is my work assignment :(  ... How do I know if it's a software problem or hardware... if it is hardware, could the data in there be recovered.

additional info:
-I drop it for the first time yesterday, it was 11inch and in a pouch.
-and it's always asking for chkdsk, but I ignore and cancel it.(before it undetected by my computer)....

Let it check disk. Don't let windows format it because you might lose the data.

You might try this program?

http://www.piriform.com/blog/2013/6/5/recuva-v147

that Recuva is used to recover deleted files. that's not the problem. my computer doesn't detect my external hdd... how can I recover from undetectable drives...

sorry for my bad English. I'm kind of shocked right now. everything is in that hdd..

Recuva might detect the drive and be able to extract the files from it. Acronis disk director might help too. Like I said, let windows check the drive. But do not let windows format it. ChkDisk might be able to repair the file system. If not boot software will help, you might take the HDD out and see if you can connect it with USB cables and an adapter or maybe even right to a sata port on your MB. Maybe the case and the electronics of the case is broken and hopefully the HDD it's self is OK.

I'm having the same issue bot only when plugged in USB3. When I plugged my MInistation 1TB to a USB2 port, it had many issues but was still recognised. I could repair the damaged sectors and save my precious data. So it works in USB2 with yellow light, but when I plug on USB3 the blue light come for 1 second and then disappear, even though the disk is spinning...

PS: my disk is 1 day old :(
