Almost through with building my new system, but stuck as to what setup is best for 1 SSD and 1 HDD on the Asus p9x79 ws. AHCI or IDE? Are these reversible? There are six Sata ports and am confused where the SSD, HDD, and DVD writer should go. My guess is raid 0 won't be an option as I have exhausted my budget for another HDD. Any help would be appreciated.

You can plug in the devices into any SATA ports. AHCI can be enabled in the BIOS, but make sure you do it before installing the OS!
AHCI for the SSD
SSD on SATA 0 / HD on SATA1
RAID is great for benchmarks but has no real impact unless you doing some highly specialized applications or video editing
