Unnecessary CPU pins, AM2 vs AM3?

Hi there,

I'm in the process of building a new computer, and I had it all put together before I discovered it wouldn't POST. So after taking it all out and breadboxing at step 1, I discovered then that with just the processor/HSF and mobo/speaker, it wouldn't give me a beep code -- meaning one of them is the problem.

The AM3 processor is a Phenom II 965. I had it working in an AM2 board (M2N-E) just fine -- however when I put it in almost two years ago, I broke a off a pin in one of the corners. Miraculously, it still worked fine in the AM2 board.

Now, however, I'm putting it in a new AM3 board (which I've never tested). Given that the processor *was* working with the missing pin in the AM2 board, and that the motherboard is brand new, do you think that I should assume the motherboard is bad? Or could it be the case that the AM3 CPU can run without a pin in the AM2 board, but that the corner pin is now essential in the AM3 setup, causing the chip to not run with the board? Basically, I'm wanting to figure out if I should replace the board, or the CPU.

I'm pretty sure I didn't break the CPU between taking it out of the AM2 board and fitting it in the AM3 board... I could always put it back in the AM2 board and see if it POSTs fine; but again, I'm wondering if testing it in the AM2 setup is even something that's relevant, given that the chip with the missing pin may be incompatible with the AM3 board.

Any wisdom out there?

Happy Father's Day, btw.

UPDATE: Don't ask me how or why... But for some reason I found some brown syrup of some sort, a little splotch near the CPU socket on the board... I wiped it away with a QTip and re-seated the missing-pin CPU in the AM3 board, and the board now lives -- I get beep codes, and I've now seen the BIOS for the first time. So apparently the pin isn't the issue... Then again, I don't know if it was the syrup or the re-seating of the CPU that made it work. But I'm assembling this baby again to see if she'll stay with me...
