Monitor recommendations and info request

Just put together a new rig and need monitor info/recommendations. There's so much to consider and I don't want to over/under think it. IPS vs TN seems to be the biggest sticking point. I am a gamer, but will play more SP than MP. I'm a sucker for pretty graphics, so to sacrifice graphic fidelity for, say, response time---the difference in response time would have to be pretty significant. I currently have a 20" HP Pavillion, so I'm looking to go either 24 or 27". Need to keep it under $300.
Specs for my rig:
-i7 3770 3.4 (3.9) quad core CPU
-ASROCK Z77 Extreme4-M LGA mobo
-Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3gb Vapor-X gpu
-8gb (2x4) Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 1600
-Corsair HX750 PSU
-2tb Barricuda 6gb/s 7200
-OCS Vector 128gb SSD

That's great info and much of it I have already researched...but it's still all #s when u don't really have frame of reference. I have always gamed primarily on consoles (And that will probably stay the same) but will certainly use this rig to game. Problem is, I havent actively gamed on the PC since Q2/3, UT, Half-Life 2 etc....so in my mind I can't distinguish between 2ms and 6ms gtg for example. Mebbe a better question would be "given my rig and what it can do--what would u get for under $300 for someone who is traditionally a console gamer that uses a 55" LED 1080p tv". LOL
