Phenom II Compatibility Issue

Hi folks,
I'm building a computer for my wife. I bought a
"Biostar TA790GX A3+ AMD 790GX Socket AM3 ATX Motherboard"

for it. I also bought an
"AMD Phenom II X2 B59 3.4 GHz Socket AM3 Dual-Core CPU (HDXB59WFK2DGM)"

and a
"Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB kit consisting of (2) 4GB DDR3 modules, 1600 MT/s, CL9 latency, non-ECC" memory.

Apparently I didn't read enough about Phenom II CPUs. I assumed a dual-core was a dual-core and since the board supported Phenom II x3 and Phenom II x4 that the board should also support this CPU (Phenom II x2). Now, after furthur study, I find that this CPU is not on the motherboard compatibility list. All the specs seem pretty similar but since I'm not that well versed on the intricacies of CPUs, I beg for some knowledeable person to help me out.

I haven't tried it yet because I'm still waiting for it to arrive in the US Mail. If for some reason, that it will not work, then I will order a CPU that is on the list and send this one back.

Note: I read someplace that this was a "Business class" CPU and was only compatible with DDR2 memory, what ever that's worth.

Here is a short piece on this CPU:

AMD Phenom II X2 B59 debuts in HP Compaq Pro 6005 workstations

Friday February 18, 2011

Two weeks ago we published a story about Phenom II X4 B99, new business-class processor from AMD, sighted in the wild. Shortly after that the microprocessor emerged in HP Compaq Pro 6005 desktop PC, along with yet unheard-of Phenom II X2 B59, which is also a business-class CPU. Both Phenoms are not listed in specifications of HP Compaq 6005 Pro, but can be selected on the order pages for Small Form Factor and Microtower versions of the PC.

The order page on HP website doesn't provide any details on the processor, but, thanks to sale listing on the Taobao website, we know basic chip specifications. The AMD B59 runs at 3.4 GHz, has 1 MB level 2 and 6 MB L3 cache, and comes with standard features, such as AMD64, SSE3 and AMD-V virtualization. All in all, the B59 microprocessor seems to be a close relative of Phenom II X2 565 Black Edition, that was launched in December of last year. The Phenom II B59 differs from the 565 BE by locked clock multiplier, and, if the CPU-Z screenshot on the Taobao page is correct, may have 10% faster HyperTransport link. Judging by CPU-Z screenshots from the auction page, two extra cores on the B59 can be unlocked. The AMD B59 with unlocked cores is identified by BIOS as "AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 559 Processor". As usual with the business-class models, this part will likely to be shipped only as OEM version, and we may never see the X2 B59 microprocessor in retail.
[END]

I need someone to tell me if it will or will not work with my motherboard and memory? What the hell is a Business model?

TIA for any and all replies.

Hi,

Well I found this, it might be your problem...

Notes on AMD HDXB59WFK2DGM

Business class processor
The fastest supported memory is DDR2-1066 (also says DDR2/DDR3 compatible though)

from CPUWORLD. It appears you can only use DDR2 1066 as top speed. Maybe 1600 DDR3 is too fast???

Good Luck

The CPU should work. Here is the CPU support list from Biostar:

CPU SUPPORT AMD Phenom™ II X4 Processor
AMD Phenom™ II X3 Processor
AMD Phenom™ II X2 Processor
AMD Athlon™ II X4 Processor
AMD Athlon™ II X3 Processor
AMD Athlon™ II X2 Processor
Maximum CPU TDP (Thermal Design Power) : 140Watt

And there is only two Phenom II X2 CPU's listed at AMD here:
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/phenom-ii/Pages/phenom-ii-model-number-comparison.aspx

And according to that AMD web page, the memory you picked should work too. Here's the memory support list:

Support Dual Channel DDR3 800/1066/1333/1600(O.C) MHz
4 x DDR3 DIMM Memory Slot
Max. Supports up to 16GB Memory

You will have to OC the memory sticks to 1600MHz. Should be easy enough.

It's not a retail processor and so it will not be "supported" at all on retail boards. (where on earth did you get it?)

That doesn't mean it won't work. It probably will. It just might not recognize it. probable worst case you might have set it up manually, which you'll want to do to unlock it to a quad..anyway.

==============================
Thanks fungi,
Will a DDR2 module fit in a DDR3 slot?

All AM3 CPUs support DDR3. NONE support 1600MHz (normal is 1333). Even the Intel ones of that gen didn't. The memory controllers have a "stock" frequency, but can go much higher, and the memory can always run slower. It's not an issue.

No it will not. It's also VERY expensive, and you can't get DDR2 boards. The memory you bought is fine. You may just have to run it slower.than it's max. But you can also lower the CAS latencies. Again you'll want to set it up manually anyway since it's really a quad core.

Evertek, where else? :pt1cable:

Where do you set it up manually. I've never overclocked before so I'm unfamiliar with a lot of this!

There are settings in the BIOS to handle all of it. My recommendation would be to wait for the parts, try it, check that it's recognized, and if not or settings are wrong (ie, wrong speed) read your motherboard manual to familiarize yourself. Then post a new thread for help with the specific issues/manual settings. Basically you're just telling it what speed to run at if it can't figure it out.

Unlocking to a quad or overclocking (if you want to) will require manual settings, and you can google for guides on that if you're interested, then same thing. Follow up with questions.

hey unksol,
Thanks for the most helpful, great info.
I'm not into gaming and overclocking, so I'm wondering if I should maybe put this CPU on eBay and get one that will work with out all the extra rigamarole. My wife couldn't care less if it is overclocked or not and I just want to get it done so she can have a faster machine than she has. Her main thing is watching all the streaming videos on the Internet. Right now her old Biostar M7VIP, Athlon 1.8 MHz with 1G of Ram, just isn't cutting it.

Everything's better when she's happy! :D

Hi spooky2th,
It sounds like a lot more hassle than I want to go through. I think I will post this CPU on eBay, as it sounds kind of rare!

Can you recommend a CPU (around 3.0G) in this range and what memory (around 8GB) I should get for it to all be nice and novice builder friendly. I'm great with Plug n Play! :bounce:

The 8GB of Ballistix will work in MY other machine, I can always use more Memory.

Thanks for all the priceless info. :wahoo:

unksol, that's good advice, I'm going to wait and see how it responds to everything and go from there. Thanks for all the valuable advice and info.

Hi,

I was just checking out the the Phenom II X4 955 and found it to be in my price bracket. Also I will go with the 1333 Mhz. RAM and use the 1600 ram in my other machine.

I'm not techie enough for all the overclocking stuff so this way will be much easier on me and quicker as well. Like I said Plug n Play is the way!!

Thanks for all the great advice and information.

:wahoo:
