i've always had overheating problems with my old gtx 280, but now, after about 5 mins of gaming, the game minimizes and won't let me bring it back up
before this happens, my fans on my gpu ramp up to 100%

oh and just reinstalled windows yesterday, along with all my drives and etc
any recommendations or suggestions on what it might be?

Do you use multi-monitors or have any firewall software in place?

It might be a non-issue asking about the firewall, but if you use ZoneAlarm for instance and it has "Program Control" turned on, then it could be blocking one of the processes required for the game, although I think this is a shot in the dark.

If you access Task Manager, then does that tell you if the game is running or not responding?

If it says Running, have you tried using ALT+TAB to get back into the game?

no, i'm not running multi-monitors
and no, i have no other firewall software
the game says running
and of course i have tried alt tabbing, "the game minimizes and won't let me bring it back up"

When was the last time you cleaned the dust out of the old GTX280?

Also, might be an idea to get hold of speedfan, and see what temperature your GPU goes up to when it minimises. It could be reaching critical temp.

cleaned it out like a month ago
and i've used programs like msi afterburner and evga precision, i've had it reach up to 104 C
but it's not like it's playing a graphic intensive game with counter strike source

Even though CSS is not GFX intensive and more CPU, it does sound to me like you GFX card is being overworked to reach 104 C. CSS has received a lot of updates over the years (been a while since I played). Since your card is about 5 years old (?) and even though CSS is a bit older.

I had a 9800GT with 1GB (loved that card), and even that could sometimes struggle to play CSS. Lets not forget about the memory leak on chateau as well.

Two things you could try:-

1) A different GPU in the same rig
2) Lower the eye-candy on CSS

BF3 is a lot more recent if memory serves, so it will be a bit more intensive on your GFX causing it to bomb out.

I put all the settings on low for cs:s and bf3. I can actually run bf3 longer than I can cs:s. And I'm in progress of upgrading it.

What are the CPU temps in idle and when loaded?

The more I think of it, the more it sounds like your original post of your system over-heating. When it does it again, have SpeedFan or whatever, running and see if the temps drop when it is minimised. If they drop, see if you can get back into the game.

I wondering if you have an air-flow problem!

Idle- about 35C, give or take a few
Load - About 45-50C

And no, can't get back into it no matter what I try.

Looking at that thread, yes it would as the GPU core would suffer from reduced rates and one of the ways to reduce the rates would be to minimise the game being played to take the load off the core as it would not have to do the number crunching required to run the game.

The potential solutions for you are:-

1) To either add more fans to your case for better cooling
2) Buy a new case with extra fans which can connect to your mobo
3) New GPU
4) Better cooling system specifically for the GPU
5) Entirely new rig

When I swapped the case on my rig, as I use to have heat problems, this solved a lot of issues all round. If your case has multiple fans, make sure they are all clean and working.

Well. Okay. I just played LotRo on very high settings. No problems with minimizing or anything.
I would think that an mmo at very high settings would be more graphics intensive than counter strike source.

CSS can actually be more strenuous on GPUs then people think. Especially when it comes to the maps with water features like Chateau and Aztec. What temp did your GPU say when playing LotR?

Even though the GFX were set to high on LotR, was there any intense action or events which could cause the GPU to work harder? Also, the GPU when playing that game might not need to work as hard anyway, as I imagine that it isn't as fast paced as CSS can be. Also, how long did you manage to play LotR for? Try having an extended session on the game and see if it repeats the same problem.

The highest temp was like 80 or 81. I ran it for more than an hour, and there were some intense action (15 or so characters battling)

Right didn't know that before hehe... I don't think it's a heat problem then.

I'm thinking there might be a problem with the GFX driver. Can you try rolling back to an older driver? or if you haven't tried updating the driver, that might be the solution.

Kk. I'll roll back.
