Looking for a solid ssd

Hey guys. I have some money left over for a pc build I'm putting together, and I think I should throw in a boot drive for good measure. However, I can find no articles informing me as to what is a solid read/write speed. I think I should go for a 256 gb ssd, due to the fact that I will be running lots of apps (the pc will be for gaming/game design, and I may dual boot a second os down the road). ATM, my budget is around $200, though anything less then that is definitely welcome. Thanks for your time.

Stay away from Samsung 840. It uses a TLC nand which has a shorter lifespan. The Plextor M5S has MLC nand which is more reliable than TLC. If you really like Samsung SSD, go for the 840 PRO, but it will be over your budget tho.

In my opinion, 256gb is your best bet. SSD's are getting cheaper, I suggest getting a Sandisk Extreme 240GB SSD or the 256GB PLEXTOR M5S.

The Sandisk has higher write speed but the Plextor has a higher random read speed. What should I worry about more?

You don't write that much on an SSD. The read speed IMO is more important because the faster the read speed is, the faster the program loads. Btw, I have the PLEXTOR M5S and so happy with it. I suggest Sandisk Extreme because it's so cheap right now. Kind of like bang for the buck SSD.

Your welcome. Gimme an update once you have it.

johnvonmacz - I see we have another misunderstanding about the Samsung 840 Series SATA 3 6Gb/s solid state drives and the use of Triple Level Cell (TLC) flash memory. I've got another thread going about the Samsung 840 torture tests conducted by Hardware Info. The final update was posted this morning.

Here is the link to the other Tom's Hardware thread:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1655789/samsung-840-ssd-tlc-nand-torture-test-update.html

Here is the link to the Hardware Info torture tests and updates:

http://uk.hardware.info/reviews/4178/hardwareinfo-tests-lifespan-of-samsung-ssd-840-250gb-tlc-ssd-updated-with-final-conclusion.

Hardware Info concluded that with an average lifespan of 75 years for the TLC memory chips, consumers have absolutely nothing to worry about. A Samsung 840 SSD with TLC memory is just as reliable as SSD's with MLC memory, and the type of memory should not be a reason to choose one SSD over another.

Finally the SanDisk Extreme and the Plextor M5S you mentioned are older models that have been replaced by the SanDisk Extreme II and the Plextor PX-M5 Pro Extreme

Inr3t1a - If you are in the USA, then you can purchase a modern 3rd generation, SATA 3, 6Gb/s ssd for less than $200.00 and still have some money left over. If you are in another country, then you may find that prices are higher. Availability may also be a problem.

I am a US resident, so would you recommend the newer Plextor you mentioned? Thanks for the clarification there.

Yes the Plextor SSD I mentioned is let's say a year older than the M5 Pro Extreme. But it still uses the fairly new Marvell Controller and still a beast. I recommended the M5S for him because it's in the range of his budget which is not over $200 but yeah overall, Anything from PLEXTOR is pretty much a good buy SSD. I'm happy with their customer service.

The Plextor PX-M5 Pro Extreme 256GB ssd is currently on sale today and tomorrow at newegg in the USA for $199.99. Shipping is free. In addition there is a $10.00 mail in rebate which brings the final price down to $189.99. Here is the link:

Wow that's totally a steal! I got my M5S for $199.99 and thought it was a good deal. Well I live in Canada so prices are much higher than U.S.
