New Graphics Card(s) Monitor Goes Black Mid-Game

So I bought a 560 gtx awhile ago and the gaming experience was fine for maybe a couple hours before the monitor would shut off mid game, with the computer still running. The monitor would be in a state where its "on" waiting to receive signal from the computer, with a blinking light near the power fingerswipe button. The sound goes off too as best I can remember. I am forced to turn off the computer and it immediately shuts off with one press of the power button (no holding it down required).

I returned the card and put my old card in (460gtx) and everything was fine.

I bought a 660 gtx ti yesterday and am again having this same problem.

The card doesn't overheat as far as I can tell. 47 degrees high. 31 degrees low.

Card drivers are upto date.

My motherboard is an Asrock x58 Extreme.
Intel I7 920 at 2.8 ghz.

The performance of the card is great, but 15 mins into a game and it does the black screen on me.

What should I try to fix this? Also sorry if this is the wrong forum.

It is a 750w power supply I believe, also pretty new. Ive been using it with my old graphics card and haven't had any problems. Also had the same problem with my 560gtx when I had a different power supply. So I'm not sure the psu is bad.

I've been researching on the internet and have a list of things I can check for or fix:

1. Check cpu temps and case temps. (I've only checked gpu temps and they are fine)
2. Configure bios and windows power settings for performance and tell it to never go to sleep.
3. Try running games in windowed mode.
4. Replace hdmi cable (the hdmi cable I have is ancient and was using an hdmi miniconverter to be able to plug into the 460gtx)
5. Update motherboard drivers (not sure if that's the same as updating the bios, which I've done already.
6. I currently have the power cable from the psu plugged into a surge protector. Should probably have it plugged into the wall.

I'll do all these when I get home tonight. Any other ideas what could be causing this problem? It only happened when I put in the two gfx cards. Both are pci-e 3.0 but my mobo supports 2.0. I heard that they are backwards compatible though. Itd be easier to get an idea what the problem is if I got an nvidia throw error or blue screen but I don't. Monitor just goes to sleep/standby while the computer stays running.

I will get that info when I get home from work today. I can't remember the brand or model but I have the box. Thank you very much.

well it may be for the vga/dvi/hdmi cable, try testing with new ones but as u remarked"The sound goes off too as best I can remember" then it's not only the monitor it may be the psu or the mobo;give us the details of ur psu

I installed the newest nvidia drivers with my 460gtx, and when I uninstalled that card and put the new card in, windows automatically searched for the drivers that were already installed. I thought that was an ok way to do it, but I guess people are telling me I need to uninstall and reinstall the drivers with the new gfx card already in the machine. Also to disable windows autoupdate or whatever. That right?

Also last night the machine didn't give me any problems while playing certain games. Guild Wars 2 was fine on max settings. Arma3 was fine on low/medium settings, but Hitman Absolution on high/ultra settings ran for about 10 minutes before giving me the problem. Maybe its a certain graphical feature like ssao or some directx11 thing? I'll reinstall the drivers tonight.

Cpu is around 70-78c while under load.

My processor is actually a i7 930 running at 2.8ghz, not a 920 sorry.

Those temps are definitely too high. This could be part of your problem. Open up your case and see if the cooling fins on the CPU cooler are full of dust. If so blow them out with compressed air or something. You might also consider an aftermarket cooler (assuming you don't already use one).

Any idea what temps the GPU runs at?

Its a stock heatsink, yeah I need to clean it out. I don't want to take it off if I don't have to (don't want to applythermal paste. You think I'm good with just spraying air on it for now?

Also the gpu stays at a constant 50c during load.
