To all,

Looking for some expert advice that can help me out in this most troubling of times. :) . So any help is appreciated.

Recently built out my first rig and it is running fine. I can play Left 4 Dead 2 with graphics maxed out with no problems but when playing Star Craft 2 with settings maxed it will play for a minute or two and crash. When I lower the settings I get longer playability maybe 10 to 15 minutes but still it crashes.

Set-up
Case: NZXT Phantom (stock fan set-up)
Mobo: MSI -Z77A - G45
Processor: Intel i5 - 3570k @ 3.4ghz
Memory: 8GB Corsair DDR 3 @ 1333 c9
Graphics: EVGA 650GTX TI - Boost
PSU: Corsair modular 600W
O/S Windows 7 Ultimate.
Primary Hard drive: Samsung SSD Pro 840 - 120gb
Secondary Hard drive: WD Black 1 TB

No overclocking or desire to at this point, except for what the EVGA did on the graphics card out of the box.

No modifications have been made to the BIOS.

Reinstalled windows, patched with the latest updates to include latest NVDIA driver. Besides the games, Skype and Avast, nothing else loaded on machine.

Regarding over-heating I didn't put any thermal paste on the CPU, assumed Intel did when putting on the processor and am using the stock fan.

Running application HW Monitor

CPU (across all cores) at idle is sitting from 85 to about 95F however it shows a max value of from 115F to 120F. Not sure if that is from boot-up or maximum since I put it on.

SSD Drive is running 82F and the WD is at 95F

Graphics card is idling around 90F and has a max of 102

Motherboard reports CPU fan is 100%

Thanks again. Took me a week to put this box together after stumbling though every newbie mistake possible and would really hate to see my work go to waste and be forced to play Farmville only.

Hm, that could be either a RAM issue, or EVGA may have screwed up on the overclock that they put on the card. Try re seating the RAM, and trying it out with other systems. Same with the graphics card. If you have the same issues on other systems, then it is likely a hardware issue. If it is OK in another system, then it is something to do with your specific system.

Play the games in a windowed mode so you can monitor the temps while your playing. What they are at idle doesn't say much for what they get to while gaming. If it's crashing while gaming and just turning completely off it's a good indication that your getting to hot and the safety features are kicking in and shutting your system down.

What do your event logs say? Any errors/warnings there?
Can you describe the crash? I'm assuming that it just turns off as if the power cable was pulled.

@Exploit. I don't think it would be a RAM issue... He would typically received a Stop error (bsod) if it were ram related. Could be a graphics card issue.. But that would likely result in a no signal output and not shut down the entire system. Just my .02 cents.

Guys,

Thanks for the quick reply guys

Nothing in the event logs except the improper shutdown error. Will try running Star Craft in a window and see what the temps come out as.

Since it's actually shutting down the system.. I imagine you'll find a issue with heat.

Make sure your case has proper air flow. You may need to re apply the thermal paste. The manufacturer isn't always the best at applying it (the stuff that comes pre applied) Let us know what you find.

Update on the StarCraft 2 runs.

Ran them in a Windows screen going from medium to Ultra (maxed settings). I didn't get a frams per second at ultra but medium starting around 120 fps.

Tempature wise
CPU maxed out at 132F and the GPU maxed at 170F. However, no crashes.

Airflow in case is good as the cables are tucked away in back and and it is running 5 fans and the case is pretty large (almost overkill).

As far as the thermal paste. I never put any on so it is all stock. Thinking I may need to buy some. Suggestions? Also am I just worried about the CPU or do I have to do anything with the graphics cared.

Again appreciated your help guys.

I will still bet on RAM, if your temps are OK. Most people don't know, but RAM issues can cause all sorts of silly, not just blue screens. You can run memtest86, or a similar program to test them. I only suggest RAM in this case because his temperatures that have been provided seem normal, and thermal paste comes on the stock intel heatsink.

It was clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate to the SSD drive. I did an uninstall and reinstall to the SSD drive after that.

Just ran a CPU stress HEAVY load and it pushed the CPU to about 140 to 145 degrees at 100% load. No crashing occurred.

Tempted to put in my 240 GTX card into the box and see if that changes anything. It was running Starcraft fine under a much older system though without the graphics capabilities max out.

Ok, good

PSU issue. Do you have another to test with?

OP is loosing power as if the cable is being yanked out.. I don't see how it could be caused by anything other then Heat, PSU, or Mobo.

Heat has been established as a non factor.
