Hey

I have a core 2 duo e7400 and gtx660, i should be able to run games like far cry 3, crysis 3, assassin's creed, battlefield 4 right?Altough my cpu will limit my gtx. This cpu thing limiting the video card annoys me

1920x1080 monitor and 4 gb ram

You should be able to run those kinds of games, sure. That's an E7500 on the graph though but the extra 200MHz or so won't change these scores too much. Maybe 2-5 FPS difference between the two.

But here is a comparison between the E7500 and the i7-2600k. The E7500, which is very slightly better than your part, can hold its own in some titles, but in more demanding products is more likely to be taxed in comparison to the 2600k. You may have somewhat lower (not much, but a little lower) scores with your CPU. Also the kind of RAM you have and the speed of your hard drive could affect performance too, this is just an "all things being roughly equal" comparison.

My suggestion is to try and run these titles at medium quality first, and if you are getting good results, go from there. Probably don't start at 1080 resolution, either.

If you need a new board, just get the haswell. The CPU performance boost is roughly 10% but, it's an extra 10% from ivy bridge at equivalent clock speeds so no reason to not go for the best. 4670k is ideal for gaming, 4770k if you're going to do streaming/gaming.

I'm simply using the 2600k as a reference to a relatively modern processor vs. a dual core Wolfdale. Obviously newer Intel chips in comparison to Sandy will perform somewhat better, but only about 10-15%, so it's still a relevant metric with simple arithmetic to extrapolate IB or Haswell performance. Of course the OP could use Anand Bench to retrieve the relevant data for those processors for more detailed information.

You should also determine if you will overclock your processor. If not, you may not need a K-part and can save some money in the process. That is, if you wish to upgrade, and have the funding to upgrade.

I need a new board and ddr3 ram.

Below is the performance in Crysis of various CPUs with the GTX 680 @ 1920x1200 resolution and medium graphics quality. The Core 2 Duo E7400 is not listed in the chart.

Generally speaking, the 1st gen Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs are 10% more powerful than the Core 2 Duo / Quad series. The 2nd gen Core i3-/i5/i7 CPU are another 12% more powerful. Lastly, the 3rd gen Ivy Bridge Core i3/i/5/i7 tacks on another 6% of performance increase. That basically means at the same clockspeed, a dual core i3 CPU is about 31% more powerful and a Core 2 Duo CPU.

The i3-3220 is a 3rd gen Core i3 CPU. If the Core 2 Duo CPU is clocked at 3.30GHz, then that would mean the approximate performance with the GTX 680 would be about equal to the AMD Athlon II X2 265. 31 FPS divided by 1.31 equals roughly 24 FPS.
