So what do you guys think? It seems the 7970 outperforms the 770 and 680 in almost all games and benchmarks.

But the 680 has the benefit of being tested and very popular.

The 770 is new but outperforms the 680 almost all of the time.

Which would you get?

So I never like seeing questions not answered or 'best answer' selected, so I thought I would chime in.

Personally I would get a GTX 770. In fact I did. I had 5850 in crossfire, and going to the single 770 was revolutionary. Thanks to AMD never quite fixing the crossfire issues the 5xxx cards had, almost every game I played I barely got better performance with 2 cards than I did with just a single 5850.

My GTX 770 doesn't get close to the thermal limit playing games like modded Skyrim or BF3, so no throttling.

Of course I'm sure AMD has come along way since then, but this is just my opinion.

If you are going to be only gaming, and because this is my personal recommendation, I would go with the GTX 770 with non reference cooler; a...

The 770 and 680 are nearly identical... difference being higher memory clock out of the box and boost 2.0. Nothing a little firmware flash cannot take care of with the 680.

The 7970 is a good card by itself... problems start presenting themselves when going to multi-card. Where the 7970 shines in comparison to the GK104 (680/770↓) is in double precision. On the otherhand, nVidia offers some features that AMD cards don't have - ie: PhysX, FXAA, TXAA, Adaptive Vsync, etc... not like it matters to me as I use none of them but one thing is certain, the 770/680 use far less power, cooler and are generally more quiet.

In the end, it's preference.

It is a myth that Kepler 770/680 run cooler they do use less power nonetheless they are hot chips, all reference 680's owner will tell you that custom fan curves are required to avoid throttling. Of course non reference is another story entirely, both 7970 and 680 have cooler quieter solution in that market as you know

Budget is below 600$ Canadian or so. The radeon card is very tempting because its bundled with 3 other games (crysis 3, bioshock infinite, and Blood dragon). The problem is that I really like the nvidia physx technology and can see it getting much more popular soon, even though it literally murders my precious fps, but the hd 7970 seems like the more powerful card. So damn hard to deside!

Will probably go with 770 in the end, its smaller and more effiecient

I agree, there are many stories of throttling on vanilla 680's over on OCN and what can be done to avoid it (mostly mods). But again, and informed buyer is going to aim for the latter you mentioned (non-reference). I have the 680 TOP's and they are cool... like sub 60°c cool. And are quiet for the most part. Yet again, I paid a pretty penny for them...

The 7970 is a good choice + the games. You could even sell the games... and PhysX is losing momentum, it won't get any more popular than it is now. Using PhysX as a purchasing decision would be a folly... it's "cool" but not widely adopted and HAVOK is where it's at.

Never owned a Asus TOP based card yet..maybe next gen

You'd like them, Radeon or nVidia TOP line. Definitely exhibit quality. A few drawbacks though, they are big and triple slot. So room is an issue, especially board slot spacing and had to pay premium for a board that gave me the spacing and extra slots for expansion without cramping the cards.

Well that's one way to resurrect and old thread :D

If it matters ive decided to wait till the next generation AMD gpus to see what they have to offer. Since they claim that games are going to be optimized for AMD, I might as well see how that holds true. Plus my current gpu(gt 640 lol) is able to run most games at high settings and 40+ fps as long as physics, water effects and shadows are turned off. It still looks better than console by A LOT though.

You didn't have to choose me mate, I just wanted to see what route you took. I did some more research, and got schooled here by another user, and honestly just a regular 7970 is a good choice if you are OK with overclocking the unit.

Waiting for the next gen is always an option, too.

And sorry for the resurrection, I didn't notice the date until now...

Really? Did i just see these phrases? AMD in consoles means games will run better on AMD cards over NVidia? How did that work out with the xbox 360 guys? Nvidia cards still curb-stomp AMD cards even with the fact that current micro$oft consoles have had AMD/ ATI graphics hardware in them for the past 10 years and it made no difference in their favor. They are cheaper and Micro$oft wants to save money and charge you more. Games meant to run on AMD have been smoother on subpar NVidia Cards... 670 vs 7970... 670 is even a better choice over this card. I run a 770 now, but I did run a 670 and a saphire hd7970 ghz edition before that. I sold the 7970 because my performance had gone down since my switch to AMD. I run a 2600k OC'd to 4.5Ghz. Where do you all get this information stating 7970's are leading so far ahead in benchmarks? seriously. I have seen many reviews that are in the contrary; disproving your bullshit claims. Go with the 770, it is cheaper than the 7970 and even faster than the 6XX series flagship card with the higher frequency RAM. I run aida64, evga precision and logitech lcd on keyboard display monitoring this shit so I know how my cards performed in the past. NVIDIA always has a smoother experience for me and I even tried to go back to AMD... didn't last a month. Always back to the green team.

That hurt my eyes.
